Looking for a good General Practitioner in Bangkok or Pattaya

Everyone,

I am looking for a good English speaking General Practitioner in Bangkok or Pattaya. (Starting in BKK but eventually might end up in Pattaya, but main focus on Bkk right now)

I just turned 50 and I am having some medical problems which is real discouraging.

I am looking for a good GP that can trouble shoot, who cares and communicates well. Not interested in a package want a good GP I can return too.

I have been to 2 Doctors so far in Cambodia and one diagnosis me has hypertension (really didn't have clue) when it was h. pylori and the other spent more time writing the bill then caring about my situation. $30.00 for 3 mins. Which he didn't diagnosis a Vitamin B-12 deficiency causing walking/balance problems caused by the h. pylori disgraceful!

I need a GP to define what is wrong and come up with a plan of action to treat what is wrong.

Flying to Bkk in about a week and taking care of some Passport business so I should work on my medical issues at the same time.

Thanks

D

GP services are not well developed in Thailand. But if you check the websites of some of the larger private hospitals you will find doctors who practice Family Medicine (ie General Practice)

If you care to set out what issues are concerning you then more focused advice may be offered.

I would advise you stay away from the many one man/woman 'clinics' which are to be found.

Yes, a good GP is actually the hardest type of doctor to find in Thailand. The better Thai doctors all tend to specialize and it is pretty much only those with specialization who have had any training in a Western country.

You might try Dr. Nick Walters at Mission Hospital - he is one of the few Western MDs licensed to practice in Thailand. http://www.mission-hospital.org/component/k2/item/54-dr-nick-walters.html

Isn't there a UK-qualified doctor operating a clinic somewhere on Sukhumwit Road, Bangkok? Can't remember her name (and never used her services). However, might be worth looking up.

That would be Dr. Donna Robinson http://www.medconsultasia.com/

Haven't heard any feedback one way or the other

I have never had a problem with any of the GPs I have seen at Bumruungrad. I have seen many there over the years and I have found he majority of them seem pretty good at admitting their limits and referring you to a specialist if needed.

The only problems is that a simple blood test or something at Bumruungrad ends of far exceeding the actual cost of the Dr fee. Small tests and simple medicines add up incredibly quickly there. Need something serious like an MRI, CT, or surgery? Better have insurance.

That's true in the west too to a large extent. Scans beyond a basic xray are d_amn expensive. A CT scan at Bum.. is one - third the cost of a CT scan under private health care at my UK hospital, btw. Personally I'd rather have a scan where I can trust the radiologists who report on it. They are just as important as your specialist consultant I think. That means a front line hospital in Thailand or a big reliable falang land hospital (public or private) in preference

to the cheapest scan I can find in Thailand.

What are their prices?

For what? Scans? It depends on the body part, contrast fluid, length of time, etc. There is no one price. But pretty much everything at Bumrungrad is expensive now for Thailand. Still a great deal compared to out of pocket in the USA.

I don't know specific to those doctors but in general a GP consultation at a private hospital in Bangkok will range 500 - 1000 baht (doctors fee - there will also be a few hundred added on as hospital charge).

Any necessary tests are of course extra.

Do not to get medication at a hospital pharmacy unless it is a controlled drug - mark-ups are enormous. Buy at an outside pharmacy.

I've only used Dr Donna for vaccinations so far - but her and her team looked professional and you don't get the usual Thai Private Hospital 'hard sell' for services you don't need.

They are in the Raquet Club just passed Samitivej Hosptial in Phrom Phong area.
