Inside the Thai sex scene where women are sold like meat

Michael Kaplan is a journalist based in Brooklyn, NY. He has written for publications such as Details, Wired, Playboy, and New York Times Magazine, covers gambling for Cigar Aficionado, and is the author of four books.

The article is just copied from an American newspaper. It isn't Aussie. In Australia the poor 18 year olds from the poorer western suburbs who are sold as meat are taxed by the government, who take about a third of their earnings, or another way of looking at it, every third customer they service, the money goes to the pimp government.

Michael Kaplan, you left out of article a few details that we, your readers would like to know.

How many girls did YOU bar fine on your PATTAYA trip? You are into playboy, gambling and cigars. Hmmm.

How old were they?

Did you go to the bar where it was compulsory to take two girls? How was it?

Did you leave Lin a tip? DId she ask for money when you returned home? Did you send any?

Did you tell your wife? No? But you told your mates right?

yawn. How many of the same reports are they going to do? Different news site, Thailand, sex, awful, blah blah blah, nobody cares

True. And this guy re-ashes a 10 year old story, which he justifies by saying things haven't changed by "all accounts". And of course all those girls happened to speak good English and happy to tell their true stories to this jerk.

No doubt PC Australia will lap this up. But of course, the legal Brothels in their country are all fair dinkum,

Why doesn't he go to India, where they have many many times more prostitutes than Thailand or Australia, much more underage exploitation, far more HIV and STDs and an even more inept justice system? A little too dangerous and less comfortable perhaps?

Let's be honest, it does go on, and has done for years. But, as someone else pointed out, if they were to uncover the Thai/Thai sex scene, and I am including the boonies, where it is rife, even people living here would be amazed at how big it is.

I live in Chiang Mai and would love someone to inform me where the sex scene is rife here. Once out of Bangkok heading north there is virtually nothing and even in Bangkok it`s no longer any where near as prevalent as it used to be. Pattaya is a different story, the sex scene there has expanded over the years.

The reports regarding the Thai sex scene are wildly exaggerated, they can`t judge the whole of Thailand on Pattaya. In fact the red light districts of central Europe and Australia, a lot of it now legalised in the those countries, is much more prevailing than it is in Thailand and they should be classified as the sex capitals of the world only we hear hardly a mention. Also sex in Thailand is no longer sold on the cheap, probably equal or even more expensive then the prostitutes of Australia and Europe.

I don`t believe that most Thai women sex workers are forced into becoming prostitutes, either sold into it or for economic reasons. I`m sure that if some proper research into this subject is undertaken they will find that the majority go into this voluntary without having to twist their arms to do so.

In the absence of proper research why not just make it up as you go along?

If you were fluent in Thai, had some Thai male mates, you'd know the reality of the sex service industry aimed at Thais and connected to bars and massage parlors.

If you are a farang, with little Thai language, no Thai mates then you aren't likely to know what's going on. And if you think Chang Mai doesn't have sex workers then dream on.

You omitted Karaoke bars, short time motels and hotel 'coffee shops'.

Thank you sir. I see several short time "Resorts" which are very gaudily decorated, well lit up after dusk and have huge advertisement boards displaying the opulent room fittings and rates options when driving through Ram Intra.

I'm shocked at what they might be used for now! whistling.gif

This reporter is not giving us some sort of "insider" account of the Thai sex scene. Instead, he is recycling what is obvious to anyone who walks down certain streets any evening in Thailand.

What he does not report, possibly because he does not know or because it is too difficult and maybe a bit dangerous, is that just as there is a sex scene that caters to foreign tourists, there are also places that cater to local men throughout Thailand where the conditions are far worse for the workers and where they are much more likely to find trafficked women and girls, addiction and gross abuse.

As the topic title refers to the sale of meat, it should be noted:

Thailand:

If pay by kilogram..you can have carcass weight of 45kg lean prime meat...

can be a little dark in colour and hard to digest, but lots if it and easy to shop around.

Australia:

Have many big heifers, sometimes carcass weight over 80 and heavy marbling.

Aussie also known for wagyu-fat score off the charts.

I know where ill be shopping ;0)

Learn to read Thai. The sex scene is everywhere.

Trust me: you couldn't be more wrong if you tried.

I am fluent in Thai and know exactly what goes on. There are small drinking bars dotted around where the local Thais go for drinks with available women but it was similar in England where the local free rags were full of prostitutes advertising on the back pages as special massage services, many operating from their own homes. One phone call to the ad and a sexual service was 10 minutes away by car and this is the same all over the UK, so besides Pattaya being the exception Thailand is no more unique then in Europe and the UK. Up here in the north most or all the lady houses have been closed down. The reason I don`t go to these Thai small bars is because they are not Farlang friendly, the owners think that if too many Farlangs start using these bars it will bring unwanted attention and they too will be closed down by the police.

Of course Chiang Mai has sex workers but they don`t ply their trade as openly as in the past and guess a lot of it has gone underground out of the public eye mostly catering to the local Thais.

The entire world is a sex scene!

Marriage is legal prostitution! If you don't believe it stop giving her everything and watch her run. And how many marriages are monogamous today? None comes to mind.

The proceeds from the oldest profession has developed countries, businesses, fed families, educated populations and more. Sounds good to me.

Sadly, there are sex slaves, but in traveling to 50 countries, living in two in Asia, America, Europe and Central America I never was offered, nor heard about any sex slaves.

All the ladies over the last 45 years seemed pretty content in taking my money including my two ex wives!

I heard more complaints in marriage....

The only time I felt like a piece of meat was working for large Corporations and being married for more than 3 months.

What a DUMB thought.

Perhaps Michael likes Thai prostitutes more than Indian ones. Maybe he dd go to India as a sex tourist but was able to make up a better cover. Michael does sound a bit off to me. Google him, he comes across as a bit of a twisted, sicko pervert to me. And a sh.ttalker.

I wonder what Ben has to say to all this fuzz? Where is he hiding by the way , in soi 6 ?

He is like a hero for many local expats now. He can probably drink free beer all day.

I doubt he will ever return to the US after all this "name and shame" campaign in the media.

Makeup your mind. First you want someone to point these places out to you, then you know exactly what goes on!! Also it's not the little karaoke bars, it's the big massage places hidden around town.

A real good advertisement. Those readers might believe that sleeping with a 15 year old is the norm here.

"I remember my Pattaya hotel selling condoms at the front desk and having signs warning that the age of consent is 15".

I call this bullshit as I've been to quite a few hotels, but never saw such a sign.

Of course it is B.S.

I've never seen such signs either.

I have seen many signs alluding to "Thai lady not allowed back in guesthouse".

but i guess that doesnt sell.

Too much bs in this world of bullshit.

Inside the Aussie Sex Scene where Women are Women are Sold Like Meat:

US sailors wear out sex workers

Perth

May 2 2002

Perth prostitutes were reeling from exhaustion following an influx of United States sailors stressed from a stint in a war zone, a well-known madam said today.

Mary-Anne Kenworthy said she was forced to close the doors of her famous Langtrees brothel for only the third time ever yesterday because her prostitutes were so worn out they could no longer provide a quality service.

When she realised the sex workers just couldn't cope any more she closed Langtrees doors for a day rather than risk the brothel's reputation.

"We're the biggest and the best, I'd rather take nothing than offer a poor service," Ms Kenworthy said.

Langtrees did a week's business in just three days after 5,500 American sailors disembarked in Fremantle on Sunday, many of them stressed from their encounter with war, she said.

Three US warships - the aircraft carrier USS John C Stennis, the guided missile cruiser USS Port Royal and the fast combat support ship USS Bridge - were returning from taking part in the war against terror.

"A lot of it was stress, they'd been in the war zone," Ms Kenworthy said.

"And they were a lot more agitated sexually because they'd been at sea too long.

"All the sex workers in Perth would have been exhausted."

Well, maybe sexual prowess is not the Aussie forte. You know the old Aussie retort-- How do you make an Aussie woman reach orgasm? Who cares.

Totally agree except the part about the whole family of 20 turning up as I had that happen to me in Thailand in 97. I have been told that all Philipino's actually like foreigners but have been warn they will not harm/rob me and the only way to get them to dislike you is your mouth. They don't like criticism of their way of life and their government. Still a little bit like Thailand as it is similar regarding online postings. Do not post any criticism online or the police will come knocking. Bohol and Cebu and even Olongapo or ok places. No crappy rules on immigration like Thailand just once every 2 month visit to immigration takes about 1 hour to get a 2 month extension to your tourist visa at a cost of around $90. You can get Permanent residence for a very reasonable price $600 then only one trip annually to immigration to renew your ID card costs about $30.

I'm sorry to inform you that I've already sold my Hoover for $ 31. BTW, where do you grow your magic mushrooms?
