Off season probably fine but I will probably not go back because of the traffic....in February it took 1 HR 45 min to travel from airport to Patong in early afternoon.....this used to take 45 min. It does help , however, if taxi driver uses some short cuts, not always staying on the main roads.

I'm concerned about the safety too.

I don't want to get beat up by a Thai gang!

Stay in your own house, and dont ever come out anymore.

And keep skyping your mum every day.

And wash behind your ears ,and change your underwear each day... mummy won't be happy if your not clean...

And keep a copy of Paddington Besr by your bedside locker...

Don't knock Paddington Bear !!!!

I was in Phuket, Ao Nang and Karabi in 1992, and I was back for a few weeks in 2014. Phuket and Ao Nang had changed tremendously and not for the better. Karabi not so much. Take the ferry to Karabi and stop for lunch on the way at Ko Phi Phi. There are some good beaches in the Karabi area and the atmosphere is so much better.

20 years ago it was fine. Too many farang now.

I was on some islands there last week. I swear the tourists consisted of at least 90% Chinese and a few farangs. The place was awash with them. re there any islands in the south that don't have many tourists?

Many, but if you go to Phi Phi, Coral Island, James Bond or Ko Racha what do you expect? It to be deserted? Go a bit further north to Koh Chang (not Trat) or even Koh Phayam both in Ranong Provence if you want to get away from Chinese. Never seen them there yet, but the times they are a changing. wai2.gif

What a pathetic comment !

I have been here for many tears and have never been "beat up" by a Thai gang.

If you are one that attracts or looks for trouble then stay away!

Removed typo

Coming here since 76 and lived here 11 years and I haven't been beaten up attacked yet or come close to it by man, woman anything in-between or even a soi dog. If you attack first they will turn on you.

i have a been once in my life, and i will certainly not going back, even in the next life... you can smell the seedy element

No "seedy" smell where I live.

Which low class, cheap dump did you stay in ?

pucket... i stayed pucket.laugh.png

seriously pattaya is a real shithole, but somehow phuket manage to be worst.

When i was there, i got a strange feeling. It was really uncomfortable. It was maybe the stench or the ladyboys... I can hardly describe my feeling.

Phuket you go once, and you never go back again. Never, never, never!whistling.gif

and dont even think about phiphi islands. 10 years ago, it was quiete, and beautiful. Today, you have thousands of chinese tourists on a tiny tiny but really TINY beach, and you have garbage EVERYWHERE.

Sounds like a right twit. What a silly question. As one contributor says, Google has all kinds of info' on this lovely island. Much better than Bali, the West Indies, Hawaii - but avoid Patong - even the Thais loathe it.

If you encountered "ladyboys" we know what your preferences are and what you were seeking ------I am sure Pattaya meets those needs better than Patong.

No "ladyboys" where I live and socialise. --------------------

Keep the "strange feeling " and stay away.

There is a wonderful internet thingy called Google.

If you ask Mr Google nicely he will tell you all you could wish to know about Phuket.

If you do not feel like visiting then stay away because no one will miss you.

And, if you form your opinions by what you read on the internet--which is too often the only experience so many possess--you might as well just stay in your bed and imagine what you would do.

You are thinking of going to Phuket - not Pattaya. They are not the same. Lived here 18 years and never had any problem with the locals.

20 years ago it was fine. Too many farang now.

45 years ago it was fantastic. I only saw one other farang while I was there.

I go to Phuket often; I have plenty of friends there and I enjoy it for limited visits. It can still be enjoyable for a smart newcomer; take a scooter and get out of urban squalor. There are numerous secluded beaches and hills, and many little out of the way hotels, bars and restaurants. However, there is a change for the worse--costly, ripoffs, hassles and far too many old dragons of the trade.

I first visited Phuket some forty-eight years ago. I landed at Phuket on a boat from Penang. The immigration kiosk had closed, so I went into Phuket town and enjoyed a few days drinking Amaritt beer and Mekong soda with some lovelies--great time, no hassles, saw very few farangs and no ladyboys. I made my way to Bangkok for a few more days of party--even stayed at the Grace, before it got full of sand. When attempting to leave at Don Mueang, I was questioned about my lack of a Thai entry stamp. I explained why, but the IO said, "immigration always open." Yeah, sure; well, luckily I found my boat ticket--Penang to Phuket. So, they let me go--probably would not happen today, eh? Funny thing, no one suggested I should have waited until the IOs came back the next morning.
