Visa Run To Aranyapatet/poi Pet

Recommended Posts

Hello folks

I'll need to be going to Aranya/Poi Pet for the 90 day visa run for my 1 year Non-imm 'O' multi-entry visa late next month. Last time I went was over 3 years ago. I'll be going on my own (without a 'visa run service') so what is the most expeditious way of getting the stamp and clearing off? Do you still have to enter Cambodia and get a cambo visa and associated stamps, etc., or can you exit thai immigration, turn around and re-enter thailand without the hassle?

Any advice is appreciated from folks that have been there recently...would be nice to have a step - by - step walk through, best times of the week to go, etc...

Dante should have been an expat needing to go through immigration at that shedhole...would have colored his vision of hel_l and Purgatory accordingly...

As far as I can see, the process is exactly the same as doing a border run on a tourist visa, or a visa exempt stamp.

I would suggest using a service to eliminate any possibility of problems. How much are you expecting to save by doing it yourself, and is it worth the potential savings? These are the questions you must ask yourself. These border officials work as a team and like people to play the game their way.

How can you leave Thailand without entering another country at a land border? There's no doubt you'll need to get a Cambodian visa which costs $20 US.

I've never heard of any problems with using visarun agents to Cambodia. I'm sure percentage wise, the majority of visaruns are done to the Cambodian border posts so if there were any problems, it's sure we would have heard some by now.

I live in Suphanburi and a cross country drive in our minivan with the family on an excursion sounds like a good idea. Is there a big disadvantage to approaching the immigration sub-species, passport in hand and wanting to perform a routine exercise like a visa run? It looked to be straight forward 3 years ago except for the cambo immigration people sneeringly sizing you up to see if any money was to be made. What I would like to know is there any difference between then and now and any tips that folks could provide?

btw...some years ago someone said that in S'pore you could get off the plane, wait in transit and board the next plane back to BKK...all BKK immigration wanted to see was an exit stamp. I'm wondering if the same is possible at Aranya...removing the cambo people from the equation would be a big improvement...the filth, squalor and stink of crossing that bridge makes me wanna...wannna :o

You need to have the entry/exit stamp next to your cambodia visa before Thai Immiration let you back in.

The procedure is about the same as years ago.

The visa is at least 1000.- and they try to extort any addl money out of you , prepare at least 100.- to 300.- extra , not sure as I went recently only to the other border.

JR Texas (51, USA): REPLY TO TUTSIWARRIOR: If you are going by bus, the bus station is a few km from the border. Just get off and get one of the local motorcycle taxi drivers to take you to the border (about 60 baht I think). He will drop you off and you will have to walk a good distance to get to the first immigration point. Just follow the flow of people. The first immigration point is on your left and you will see it is marked for Thais, Foreigners (Aliens from other planets). If you have that "white thing" in your passport, all you need to do is walk up in front of the counter (after removing sunglasses) and wait for the kind officer to motion you to come forward. Hand him the passport. No smiles. No frowns. No questions. He will likely allow you to exit Thailand. Walk out with your passport. Cross the bridge with all of the trash in the water below. After crossing the bridge start crossing the road towards your right. You will eventually see a Cambodian checkpoint on your right just after the first casino. Go up the one of the officers and smile and hand him your passport (be sure and have a passport picture with you as he will need it). You have to pay more than it says on the wall above you. Just give him 1000 baht (and maybe a 100 baht tip). Ask him to please help you fill out the forms. He will take your passport and money and do it for you. Just go sit down where you see all of the chairs. Let him know you are not staying in Cambodia and are returing to Thailand right away. Eventually he will return your passport to you with the forms duly filled out (there are places that you must sign). Then, you can take the shuttle bus to the next checkpoint along with lots of other people (not a bad idea) or just walk to the next checkpoint. If you walk, just walk down the road on the right side until you see the immigration officials. Hopefully there will be a lot of people there. I am saying this because if you are alone at this point, they may decide to ask you for more money. Try to wait for several other people. If they ask, you can either pay them or let them know that you have already paid for everything....they may let you pass if they think you are not an easy mark. This is the entrance to Cambodia checkpoint. They will take your picture and go over your passport and give you "the look" to see if you jump or not. Just be calm. Then, after you get your passport back, walk out the door to your left, turn right and go forward, then cross the street to your left. The exit Cambodia checkpoint is there. Wait in line. Give them your passport. They may ask for more money at this point, but usually do not. Get your passport back and walk, down the right side of the street back to Thailand. There is a small cafe past the casino that serves very good hamburgers.......suggest eating a hamburger and relaxing. Then start walking back to the entrance to Thailand checkpoint. You need to cross the street and be on the left side. Cross the bridge. Have your passport handy to show the immigration officials out front. They will hand you a white immigration form that you must fill out. Fill it out. Wait in line with the other 1000000 expats trying to deal with Thailand's visa rules. If everything is in order (sorry..........your papers are not in order!), you should clear the Thailand checkpoint with no problem. Then go back the way you came in, but you will have to turn right at some point and cross another type of checkpoint (they will want to look inside your bags and may ask to see your passport........usually they say nothing). Once past this point you are free and can find another taxi to take you back to the bus station........

Good luck. That is how I remember it. Others might remember it differently.

All land crossings check for exit stamps. If there is any more doubt about the need for Cambodia exit stamp let this, from home page of Aranyaprathet Immigration web site remove it (and yes, you are "crossing into Thailand from Cambodia"):

Foreigners crossing into Thailand from Cambodia must have valid a exit stamp from the Cambodian immigration authorities in their passport.

- Foreigners entering Thailand without having their travel documents checked will be considered illegal immigrants and are subject to prosecution according to Thai immigration laws.

I realize that but there are suggestions that using an agent to obtain a Visa in the current climate is illegal or against regulations and as such would apply to Cambodia as well. Would be useful to know if it really is illegal to use one, anyone know for certain?

In case of Aranyaprathet, visa agents as useless. Well, if oyu love to throw your maney by the window you can use them, but there is not reason.

The fees :

Cambodian visa : 1000 bht (sometimes they do not accept US$ because the change rate, so better to have both US$ and th Bht).

CAmbodian Police (first stop in Cambodia to get the enter stamp) 100 bht.

Cambodian Police (for the exit stamp) 0 to 100 bht. Pay if you want it fast, do not pay if you want some arguments

For both exit and enter in Thailand, the cost is free (in 5 years I was never ever asked one bath by the immigration.).

I usually is the guy who complain about Thailand, but Aranyaprathet Immigration deparment is a jewel (I mean men and women working there, not the usuall hasslers trying to rip off the tourist). Immigration officers are helpfull, polite , efficient, never ask for a bribe. Totallt opposit of Nong Kwai where I always felt something where wrong in my documents, or that I was a mostwanted fugitive trying to buy his way out ... FOr Nong Kwai I would advise to get help, for Aranyaprthet there is no need
