Ukrainian faces 5-year blacklist for 337-day overstay

uu.jpg

PATTAYA:--A homeless Ukrainian man has become the first high-profile case of a foreigner being blacklisted from Thailand under new immigration regulations when he was caught overstaying his visa by nearly a year.

Aleksan Der Drozhak, 33, was taken into custody by Chonburi Immigration Office police April 26 near Jomtien Beach Road and Soi 5. He had no identification or travel documents on him.

Officers searched the immigration database and discovered he had entered the kingdom on Aug. 31, 2014 and had permission to stay in the country until May 28 last year, leaving him with 337 days of overstay.

Homeless and hungry, the Ukrainian was given food and drink before being processed for deportation.

Under new regulations that went into effect March 20, he now faces being banned from Thailand for five years. He is the first case reported by Chonburi Immigration of a ban for a serious overstay.

You said Ukrainian you said everything, and before the blacklisted stamp's ink will dry, this guy is going

to have another passport which he will enter Thailand with.... so don't hold your breath TO-MO guys,

this blacklisting idea will work for most but not for some.....

near Jomtien Beach Road and Soi 5.

Seems he was begging for deportation when loitering close to the immigration office cheesy.gif

Plus coming back via U- Tapao airport. thumbsup.gif

No way that guy is 33. He looks 63

He played his hand for all it was worth, , and now its show time.

How long will he spend in immigration detention waiting for someone to stump up the air fare home?

I don't believe in this case.

He is obviously pennyless/broken, not a mafia weapon dealer.

If he ever gets out of detention prison and got back home, how will he pay for a new ticket?

New passport: would probably work if he gets (a false) one with different name and birthday.

This is the minimum that is automatically scanned and looked up at airport checkpoints.

"Probably": seems like they still have not introduced fingerprinting at the checkpoints as announced two (?) years ago?

What a laughter.

Fingerprinting and face recognition would make an end to "new passport"/"new name".

He will likely be fingerprinted, and I thought fingerprints for people entering was scheduled for this year sometime.... so time is short for him (and with no money) if he were to try and play games. Realize though that changing your name and re-entering Thailand under a different name after knowing your blacklist would likely be considered illegal entry -- and if caught later probably considered a criminal offense.

I can hear him saying a big thanks everybody and see you all soon when I have saved up some more money for my next holiday....

I think the Thai government stump up the money because even if they stick him in jail for a few months it is costing them money. If you want a free ticket home this appears the way to go hang around an immigration office and get detained !!!!

I would not pin any hopes on that happening any time soon ....

If he's homeless, he really wasn't here, now was he.

he did right not telling them his home, so now they call him homeless, but let's assume his as corrupt as every other Ukrainian, which means he has a home and it's filled with stolen goods and cheap prostitutes... not something you want to let the government devour in a simple matter of a stolen passport you were using to access a 3rd world country...

Drugs, alcohol and late nights will do that mate..

10 days is the maximum detenetion period but unfortunately this is Thailand

..I think the attutude here because he is from the Ukraine assuming he is no good is a disgrace.....the commie rat lol

Always pick the low hanging fruit first.

He played his hand for all it was worth, , and now its show time.

Sounds like the story of my life. I wonder when show time will be for me you know when the curtain falls and everything goes quiet.

Thailand loosing another quality tourist oh no!! 337 day overstay and hanging out close to immigration this guy must be a chameleon. Right under their nose.

No problem, the Nigerian in red shorts behind him, just offered him a 'new' passport.

The guy looks worried.....?

To keep the people from re-entering the country Immigration should introduce fingerprint scanners such as the ones used by Malaysian Immigration. Regardless of the name in the passport, your fingerprints give your true identity.

Just my tuppence worth but "high profile" is not the case - a homeless Ukrainian. I thought it'd be someone well known by the expat community, someone such as a ThaiVisa mod wai2.gif

Penniless, homeless... this is clearly the kind of high-profile international criminal that was depicted to sell this new crackdown to the public.

What makes this a "high profile" case? Seems he's just a common farang who ignored the immigration laws and got caught. Bye....don't let the door hit you in the you in the ass.

Good guys in, homeless guys out.

No way that guy is 33. He looks 63

You would be surprised what being homeless does to people. Knew a guy who sadly died a couple of years ago, homeless, alcoholic, 44 years old, looked 20 years older at least. He died of pneumonia and when in hospital the Doctor said he had an immune system more like an 80 year old man due to the life he was living.

If this man is 'penniless' he will be taken to Court where a Judge will determine the outcome.

If any fine imposed cannot be paid then it will have to be paid off with jail time at 200bht/day. Once that is settled he will remain in the IDC until such time as he has a ticket out of the country.
