webfact Posted May 9, 2016 Share Posted May 9, 2016 Price increase of iron rods is affecting construction industryBANGKOK: -- Building contractors are complaining about the steady rise in iron rods for construction in the past two months and also scarcity of the product which will impact on construction industry in the country.Mr Angsurat Areekul, an advisor to the Association of Thai Construction Industry, claimed that, in the past two months, the price of iron rod has increased by about 23 percent to 16-17 baht per kilogramme from 13-14 baht.Worse still, he said the price still keeps rising which will affect construction costs prompting fear that some contractors may abandon their work. He urged government authorities to step in to address the problem.Meanwhile, Mr Sangworn Liptapallop, president of Thai Construction Industry Association, disclosed that he had received many complaints from building contractors about shortage of iron rods for construction in addition to higher prices.He claimed that the price of iron rods had increased, in the past few months, by about 40 percent to about 20 baht per kilogramme.He said the association had lodged a complaint with the Commerce Ministry to address the problem which will affect on the government’s infrastructure projects.It was pointed out that the problem of iron rod shortage and rising price stemmed from China’s cutback in iron rod production.Full story: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/content/162583 -- Thai PBS 2016-05-10 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Maybe if SSI the Thai owners of the Redcar steel works hadn't have lost 29 billion baht and mothballed this plant they could have had all the cheap re bar they wanted. The Chinese have been dumping there cheap steel on the market for sometime now and have put a few iron companies out of business. Now they ut production and drive up the price, typical of there business sense. You may want to get a few facts straight before posting non sense. Who need highrises when it is proven that BKK is sinking because of them? Who want to live in non isolated flat where you just rely on air constantly? Why don't you use earth, dirt, straw and build magnificent self reliant ecodomes for a fraction of the price? I was a steel fixer in the UK for 25 years and you can't just downsize reinforced steel (rebar) as there are engineering calculations that it would affect on stress and load. If you "downsize" the steel the probability of collapse is greatly increased. A building in Israel collapsed while the Wedding ceremony was doing the traditional dance because hundreds of people were stomping on the concrete floor - fault - lack of steel! The Chinese are probably buying all the steel (scrap and already moulded reinforced steel) as they can't stop building and advancing China to the number one economy. Reinforced steel (modern era) another great British invention. Oh btw we never call it iron rods - that makes our skin crawl - its steel reinforced bar or rebar.
