I've made this journey once before and it was probably the most hellish journeys of my life. Stuck on a bus with no air con as it had broken for 15+ hours to Mukdahan. Can anybody chime in to offer the best way to get there? I have tried to search for trains but nothing concrete has cropped up.
Cheers

Airport bus to BKK airport and hop on a flight

Hmm from what I can find there are only flights 3 times a week directly from BKK! To Vientiane there are more of course, but a bus from Vientiane to Savannakhet is still around 10 hours.. are there not any trains from Bangkok to Mukdahan, maybe sleeper trains?

Take a flight from Don Muang to Nakhon Phanom and then it's 45 minutes or so in a minivan to Mukdahan. You can book the whole thing in one go with Nok Air and Air Asia's fly and ride services.

The last time I took the bus there and it was the 'VIP' bus, yellow in colour? It was not pleasant whatsoever and I feel lucky to be away from that in one piece tbh

No if it is the one they are referring to that I know of, it is on the left hand side on Phetkasem road on the way to Cha Am, after you go through the tunnel and do a slight right curve, it is there on the left

There are plenty of Mini-vans that go from HH (on Sa Song Road) to Rangsit, just ask to be dropped off at Don Muang and they'll pull up at the railway station immediately opposite DM airport, it's a matter of walking over the footbridge and a three minute walk to the new domestic terminal section...I've done it a couple of times in quick time around three and a bit hours. Relax at DM for two or three hours and there are flights to Ubon Ratchatani, then about a three and a half hour bus journey to Mukdahan, you're still looking at nine to ten hours of travel and waiting time but beats 15 hours on a bus.

Thanks a lot, seems like the best option smile.png

How are you going to get to don muang from Hua Hin? Hua Hin to BKK airport is smooth on the bus and then direct into savannakhet.

Hua hin->Don Muang->Nakon Nowhere->Mukhadan>savanket is alot of jumps compared to a Lao Air flight right in.

I will just get a taxi, should be around 1,800 as that is how much I pay to get to swampy when I need to. There is a direct flight to Savannakhet?

Lao Air gets you in early but the departure flight each day is at 1.30pm. I knew someone did Lao air in, the Nok Air out (bus from Savannakhet to Mukdahan, Mukdahan to Nahkon Phanom, flight from Nahkon P to DM. The Nok Air has a fly ride.

yes correct. the bus station after the tunnel. busses are yellow. went there 5 months ago. not perfect ( as i usualy take night train to Vientiane- in my opinion best as u go to sleep at 9pm and wake up ar 7 am at the border, snd sleep on the nice berth). but the bus was ok. i could really stretch the seat and could sleep more or less comfortably. i took teh single seat, which is better than the double seat
