Steak cooking levels

Featured Replies

Is there a standard description/wording for the following, in Thai (relating to the cooking of steak):

1. Rare

2. Medium rare

3. Medium

4. Well-done

So far, I have found the following:

1. RARE: KHON KHANG DIP (ค่อนข้างดิบ), MAI SUK MAK (ไม่สุกมาก)

2. MEDIUM RARE: SUK LEK NOI (สุกเล็กน้อย)

3. MEDIUM: SUK PAN KLANG (สุกปานกลาง), SUK SUK DIP DIP (สุกๆดิบๆ)

4. WELL-DONE: SUK MAK (สุกมาก), SUK MAK NOI (สุกมากหน่อย)

Are Thai descriptions more commonly used, or are the English descriptions (as Thai loan words) more common?

Thank you for your help.

Normally:

แรร์ (Rare)

มีเดียม แรร์ (Medium Rare)

มีเดียม (Medium)

มีเดียม เวล (Medium Well)

เวล ดัน (Well Done)

โอเวอร์คุก (Over cooked)

Honestly, I think the Thai expressions you've found are too general and far from precise, unlike the English system.

Dear Oxx,

Thank you very much for that. Much appreciated.

As I don't live in Thailand, I was not sure whether those English expressions were used (or could be understood). Many sites just gave a long explanation of how the meat was cooked.

I use สุก or สุกๆ for well done. Also I've heard มีเดียม for medium well eating out with Thai friends.

Dear Painai2,

Thank you very much for that information. I think I might just add สุกๆ, because สุก can mean so many things. I will also keep มีเดียม.

Much appreciated.
