The school just started on Monday and one of the school PC's i had "upgraded" acted very suspicious. Nothing happened when pressing the Windows Logo and a few other little problems.

Yesterday, late afternoon when i wanted to go home and switch it off, it started to download a very long time and i kept it running over night. "Please do not turn your machine off"....

Today the big and very positive surprise. Windows made a completely new and full installation, leaving all folders and apps where they were and all the problems are herewith gone.

Works like a charm, all programs are functioning properly and i was really positively surprised and of course happy. Thanks to MS !!! thumbsup.gif

Is it possible that MS checks the functionality and once there's a bigger problem it makes a new installation?

Did anybody else experience something similar?

Maybe you had "Win 10 10240" installed (the original release) and the machine just go around to upgrading to Win 10 1511 (also called Win 10 10586). Approx 3GB is downloaded in that update and of course 3GB is probably going to take a while to download...and then it takes about 10-30 minutes to install after the downloaded. This major update was suppose to occur in Nov-Dec 15 for most everyone...but for some it didn't for unknown glitch reasons. It was also referred to as the November Upgrade.

Upgraded my desktop PC (this one) on Monday.

>>> While writing I see above post: YES, version 1511.

Could not withstand my curiosity tongue.png

Upgraded from Win 7 Ultimate.

I didn't protocol all the installation steps, but as usual with MS endless long phases without any detailed "activity log".

I don't like and would favor some log screen but they will never change wink.png

I "prayed" that no power outage/spike would happen. Was lucky.

The best thing: everything works as seen so far.

But:

I shut off the "Win 10 new stuff" (no Cortana, no OneDrive, no MS account only local accounts etc. pp.).

Used "DoNotSpy 10" to shut down all the "call back MS" stuff (the entries marked as non problematic).

So now it feels like Win 7 with some new GUI/shell.

A "no round corner Win 7" biggrin.png

Much ado about little ? (for me at least) whistling.gif

Took "some hours", maybe 3?

"It's kinda like herding kittens with an occasional Siberian Tiger thrown in for comic relief." (thanks, Pib)

Off topic, have heard the expression herding cats before, context being Thai ladies rather than PCs.

Of course, I just had to try that, TYVM. laugh.png

And, of course, it didn't work. Did it work with Win7?

I also tried "systeminfo" on the command line as well as "ver".

But neither will show me this "Version 1511"? only the build nr. wink.png

I see four hotfixes applied from Jan, Feb and March 2016.

It's funny that Microsoft refers to the 1511 as the version when that number is really the ReleaseID. Still, that's a fairly weak "rant". Let's see a rant with some meat on it. :-) These type questions/complaints are pretty cool. Linux is what used to pay my rent so I know that in and out, but all my other work/play is done on Windows but I don't know my way around it like I do with Linux, so investigation on big issues like not being able to cut and past the build, er, version, er ReleaseID is informative.

Regarding the DoNotSpy10, were you able to opt out of the OpenCandy installation? I'm not a huge fan on installing freeware and in this case, it's easy enough to explore and turn this stuff off. The reality is that everyone is trying to make a buck and we are worth big money to Microsoft, Apple, Google. Choose your flavor of OS and platform and realize you'll need to shut some things off to protect your privacy.

After setup is complete, your PC will be running Windows 10 Version 1511. To see what version your PC is running, select the Start button 851aefc6-d9e7-41b6-a160-2a5e45499b33_17., then select Settings 5d39d4c5-9d22-4b29-af02-df416d341a19_91. > System > About.

On my Win10 Pro computer, it does show "Version 1511" followed by the OS Build "10586.318"

That's not his problem...his problem is he can't copy/paste that information.

By the way, I never knew about the Windows snipping tool until the other day. Pretty handy with more capability than regular screenshot. Can do a free-form, rectangular, window, full screen snip with some very very basic editing capability to add some pen/highlighting.

Nope, I already had this update -1511- installed.
