My neighbor bragged a while back that her brother was a general in the Thai army...she stated she would use his influence to prosecute a worker she believed had stolen property from her while he was working...

Ignore the amazing fact that a military officer would intervene in a civil/criminal matter...

I immediately wondered, "What does Thai military rank mean?"

That is, is it awarded on merit, political affiliation, or bribery? Is it earned, awarded, or bought?

I am former military myself, so have an acquired reflex to respect anyone who serves in this capacity...but after observing the military and police for a few years, I have little respect for anyone I see in a uniform...there is a scarcity of honor, bravery, and intelligence in this country, and I see it at every level of society...therefore, I find myself questioning everything...

I had a former gf who worked for the government as a clerk, and every promotion was accompanied by a bribe...does this deplorable custom apply to the military as well?
