OVEC organizes Young Farmer Rice Camp

BANGKOK, 25 May 2016 (NNT) - The Office of the Vocational Education Commission (OVEC) has collaborated with the Thai Rice Foundation under Royal Patronage in educating young Thai farmers about rice through the Young Farmer Rice Camp.

Chairman of the Thai Rice Foundation under Royal Patronage Dr. Sumet Tantivejkul signed a cooperation agreement with OVEC Secretary-General Chaiyaphruek Serirak. The two organizations agreed to organize the Young Farmer Rice Camp in each region to promote the development of young Thai farmers and personnel who have knowledge on rice production technology, rice processing and rice trade.

Dr. Sumet said adolescents who joined in the project would learn about water management, rice production in line with the Sufficiency Economy philosophy as well as modern rice cultivation. The project organizers hoped that the participating adolescents would pass on the knowledge to their communities and help increase the value of rice, said the chairman.

A Thai version of the Archers as a drama on TV would get more coverage and probably have more attention paid to it.

Will have to wait until one of them comes up with that idea themselves before it happens though.

In the us the high schools in predomonitly farming ,ranching areas they offer a program called "Future farmers of America"

It is offered for 4 years of school at high school level, 1 hour per school day. If students have a intrest or plan on farming it is a invaluable learning experience for them.

It covers animal husbandry from birthing, feeding treatment of sickness, preventing same etc, to slaughter. Most students personally raise animals of their choice. Welding is taught as is machinery upkeep, care etc. Basically your exposed to and taught how to handle most farm jobs including various crops raised or proposed for the area and the equiptment required to accomplish the work. Engine repair and overhaul is even included.

The most important thing is probably they learn that they can learn something new ever day and there is continual change to factor in, thus continual learning never ceases.

In all my years here I have never met anyone who wanted to be a farmer.

We have about 250 students here in the college who are all studying agriculture. Maejo university is basically focused on education in applied agriculture and Kasetsart University is basically focused on research and theoretical subjects about agriculture and many of the mayor universities like Chang Mai University, University of Payao, Kong Kaen University and Naresuan University (Phitsanulok) have agricultural departments.

Some students in primary and secondary schools (rural areas) are learning about easy/small scale agriculture during their scout training once a week.
