UK passport expires Dec 2016 - Retirement extension expires November 2016 - Returning to UK for holiday September 2016.

Advice sought:

Live in Chiang Mai and wishing to avoid trip to Bangkok prior to going to UK to get new passport. It is my understanding that I may be refused entry on my return to Thailand using my current passport as it will have less than 6 months before expiry. Will be returning to Thailand late September/ early October. However if I obtain new passport whilst in UK what will happen re my extension of stay based on retirement in the cancelled passport. Will my extension of stay become invalidated. Any advice greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

There is no requirement for your passport to be valid for 6 months.

As long as it is valid for your intended stay it will be ok.

As long as you have a Re Entry Permit your extension would still be valid and you would get a permision to stay date of Nov 16.

Carry both passports when travelling back.

Since you are form the UK there is no 6 months passport validity rule for entry. You only need a passport valid for the length of your stay.

Your extension of stay and re-entry permit in your old passport will remain valid once it is canceled. You show both passports on entry to use your re-entry permit in the old one. Immigration will stamp your entry and permit to stay in the new one. Then you will need to go to immigration to complete the stamp transfer to your new passport.
