PHUKET: -- The Phuket Country Club will host the Phuket Golf Association’s first Amateur Open this Saturday.

The event is open to both Thai and tourist amateurs and will feature cash and prizes, said Phuket Golf Association Chief Terayout Prasertphol.

“The competition will follow the rules of the United States Golf Association (USGA), The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, as well as the local rules of the Phuket Golf Association,” said Mr Terayout.

The old course is a lot of fun. You can drive the par 5 tenth green with a 4 or 5 iron by cutting across the lake but it is high risk because the green is surrounded by high boulders. Clubhouse has good food and nice atmosphere. Don;t hold out any hope of winning unless you are a master sandbagger, e.g., a registered 18 handicap playing to an actual four.

They have a combination plate of rules authorities which should prove interesting. Caddies making free drops of which there is no such thing are no doubt under the local rules. Unfortunately, they list cash prizes and no local rule is going to help when it comes to losing amateur status by accepting cash in any amount or merchandise/services in excess of $750.

This could well surpass the Texas Cheaters Open for the number of handicaps raised to a much higher level on the computer to enhance their chances to win.I will bet that a handicap of about 18 will suddenly have "the best game of his life" to shoot a 75 for a net of 57..In The Bangkok post open once they had a 12 year old boy playing in a foresum with his father and uncles scoring a great 78.The caddies told me he was given at least 15 putts that he missed and had his ball re-positioned when ever he made a bad shot.He might of had a true 110.
