PHUKET: -- A 12-metre section of a wall at the new post office in Phuket’s Talad Yai subdistrict has collapsed as a result of the continuous deluge.

Authorities were notified this morning at about 11am that large chunks of the ruined concrete wall had rolled onto Soi Narison, the thouroughfare in front of the post office, obstructing traffic.

The wall reportedly collapsed at dawn this morning, presumed to be the result of a landslide culminating with the past four days of heavy rain, which formed puddles around the wall, where drainage was noted to be insufficient.

From the picture, it looks more like the wind blew down this poorly constructed block wall.
Alternate rows of block for a much stronger structure guys.

Matching is for tile-ers, not block layers.

Their "landslide" and mine are not the same thing! Crap construction and, as said, it either blew over and just fell over from wet ground underneath.

Well they've got to blame something, they can't just come out and say crap workmanship and planning can they?

With that matching-column stacked block construction, the wall was just waiting for some 4-year old child to come along the soi and blow it over (the REAL story). Glad it fell inward.

The reason for the block alignment is to accommodate reinforced steel.

But that costs money and isn't visible when complete, so why bother?

Vertical rebar can also be used with staggered block construction and is regularly done. You can still align the holes. It's not rocket science.

Simply cutting corners or lack of basic construction knowledge. As suggested earlier, probably done by tile-setters.

Exactly correct. In our constructions we use staggered blocks with rebar in the void spaces, filled with concrete = strong wall.

With scoops like this gem I take it there have been no ladyboy robberies overnight?

Normal Thai construction. A bid of say 100,000 baht for the job,an issuance of 50,000 baht for the job and ,an actual usage of 15,000 of material for a job that required 35,000 to correctly construct it.Every pockets money all around along with the inspectors cut.
