BANGKOK: -- A sixteen year old Mor 5 student in Pak Kret, Nonthaburi had a stroke as she bought food outside her school on Monday morning.

Friends found her not breathing and she was quickly rushed to Pak Kret hospital. After attempts to revive her failed she was pronounced dead. She was just named as Parichat reported Sanook.

Her shocked friends said that she fell down as she was buying sticky rice and BBQ pork at school. They said that their friend had been buying weight loss pills off the internet for more than two months and this could be why she died.

Doctors said she had died from a stroke. The girl had no previous known medical conditions. Whether the actual cause was weight loss drugs would have to wait until further tests were carried out on the body.

It's amazing how people (not just Thais) know how to lose weight but at the same time are deluded. We all know healthy eating is good for us. We all know exercise is good for us. Yet we're so lazy we just get angry with external things when we put weight on or have health issues connected to eating poorly.

This poor young girl would have genuinely believed that a magic pill could make her look like a supermodel. And the people who push it know it's dangerous, but all is fair when making cash apparently.

Sad if this was the cause of her death.....

But I must say 99 percent of Thai People do not have a clue when it comes to eating healthy....

Most of there food is heavily Salted , Extra Sugar, and Soy Sauce....., not to mention deep fat fried food...

Any cooking programmes I do watch, it's unreal..

Never once viewed a programme about eating healthy.....

Salads ?? What's that..... Low fat dressing ??? What's that....

They need to start educating kids at school the dangers.....

But like everything else....goes right over there heads,

For some reason they know better........

Surely the issue is not 'healthy eating' but the whole set of issues around this young girl believing her body somehow needs to be changed to match an artificial image of what she should look like.

I am anything but a "Jamie Oliver" far from it.....

All basic stuff.... It's not rocket science.....

And actually Jamie Oliver ain't all that...., saying that, he has done well for himself....

Kids like sugar so we should give them sugar seems to be the lazy philosophical view of many parents and schools. Plus, lots of money to be made by the school selling all their sugary treats at the tuck shop. Kids aren't gonna buy fruit and salads.

Eating well in your formative years is so important.

Whenever I see the term "99%" attached to any claim being made about a group of other people I find myself fighting the urge to say right out 'you just made that up didn't you?."

If your username is an indication you originate from Scotland then I picture you laughing at the aburdity of your own words as you pontificate on the healthy eating habbits of the Thais.

Fact is most people dont hapve a clue about food or dont want to put in the effort. Farang and Thai alike. Some with good genes get away with it.

People always comment on my looks. As in wow lean muscular. But i was a fat bastard ince and it takes effort to stay how i am now and effort to reach it.

Nothing comes easy to the most people. Its a matter of choice and priorities. Plus some luck in genetics. But even without good genes most can improve if they really want too.

But the bad foods and alcohol are tempting.

everybody cracks on about thais unhealthy eating habits, but on my daily sightings of the thai population i do not see many obese thais walking the streets, now you compare that with a walk around a UK shopping mall, with, shall we say MBK.(or any mall) 90+ % you will see in the UK are overweight, so go on, do your own survey and report back, ok.

.

The obesity epedemic tgat first appeared in the US, spread through western societies and is now showing up across Asia has not occured because human genetics or human nature somehow changed over the past 50 years.

Wide spead common health problem, look for wide spead common cause.

When the peoblem spreads across societies look for the common vector.

Not to mention narcissistic and self-admiring with, probably, good dose of exaggeration . What have your perfect looks got to do with this thread anyway?

No genetics have not changed but foods and behaviour has. But our body is made to store fat in times of plenty. Its how we evolved now combine this with the bad caloric food and we get where we are. But some of us have better genes. I have done my research and reads tons of books and articles about foods and training as its a hobby. So i know what im talking about. To think we are all the same is crazy. You can train eat and take the same drugs as lance armstrong and not bike like him.... genetics do count.. and for some of us it lets us eat vad foods and not gain weight as much as others would.

Weight loss drugs can be a killer over the long term.Years ago,i put on a couple of stone purely through laziness and sitting down all day.I also got into 'the pub after work thing, and Indian food, etc.

I found it hard to get the weight off.My doctor prescribed me a drug called 'Apisate' At first the weight fell off. When i got back into active work,i continued with the pills.I started to feel very anxious and nervy, and i would sweat even when not hot. After a month of this,i went back to the doctors. My GP had left the practice. When my new female doctor read my notes, she immediately took me off the medication. My blood pressure was sky high and i had arrhythmia. It turns out that the pills were an Amphetamine derivative and had since been removed from the medical prescription list. She was appalled at my condition and gave me medication to control the hypertension, and the sweats.

I dont know if this medication is available, now wearing a different overcoat, but i would suggest staying away from any such diet pills, especially over here.i still have hypertension.

This is all due to peer pressure, the slim girls are role model size 6.The chubby girls want to be the same, because 'no boys like chubby girls'.And the 'in crowd',are a select group of girls that can be very wicked.

But girls will be girls and do anything to be slim and get attention.

Even chance death.

Yes weight loss drugs can be dangerous especially the ones that are effective. Also if people think.. 1 is good 5 is better. So many things can go wrong if misused. Fact is most people have no clue what they take and what the side effects and dangers are. Better not to take any in that case.

If yiu want to get and stay lean it takes lifestyle changes and most people are not willing to do so and like their alcohol and bad foods too much.

In the 12 years I've been living here I can see Thais getting fatter and more lazy ,they can't even pick their feet up when they walk the 5 meters from their motorbikes.if you want to lose weight exercise and eat carefully ,not pills

I totally agree. And yet Thai food is perceived to be among, if not THE, best in the world. Weird. What most people eat here is often of very low quality. Whenever I go overseas and see the food on sale there it's like a light has turned on.

There have been several cases in the UK recently of girls taking a substance called dinitrophenol bought off the internet to lose weight. It was originally used in diet pills in the 1930s in the USA but removed from the market due to its toxicity and dangerous side-effects. Let's hope it hasn't made it to Thailand.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/32393360/how-diet-pill-chemical-dinitrophenol-or-dnp-kills

One of the linked sanook.com articles in the OP states that it may actually have been the mother's diet pills the girl had been taking from the medicine cabinet without her mother's knowledge. The mother was initially reported as being unwilling to give up the pills for examination.
The mother also speculated she didn't know if the death was linked to a prior medical condition from 4-5 years ago when her daughter had suffered from a severe stomach ache and colic and the doctor had diagnosed her with gastritis/stomach ulcers.

Jamie Oliver was doing a good thing; trying to pressure the cnuts in Parliament to pass laws regulating school food for the sake of the younger generations that are being exposed to junk food on an ever increasing basis.

Phentermine or sibutramine maybe, and insane doses.

Quite possible its a drug that has been taken out of sales in Europe and the US but can be bought here.

Its also quite effective in curbing appetite but dangerous for people who misuse it and who are already at risk of high blood pressure. But countless people have used it without problems.

That is the problem, not everyone responds the same way to a drug and not everyone takes it responsibly.

I have once used it myself when I was still fat, but stopped quick as it affected my sleep (does not happen for everyone).

But the problem is most of the effective drugs also have serious side effects and when the recommended dose is not followed....or when people are in bad health already (fat people often are no insult meant but high blood pressure and others are common)

Again personal insults.. no problems i can take them. Hope you enjoy it.

Yes i I have tried them too. And the doses were most likely an issue like I wrote, considering she was young and didn't have an existing health issue, presumably.

I agree.. quite likely the doses but we are not sure this is the drug in question and who knows.. but still its likely. I know its easy to get this drug here, it worked good for me too but I just could not sleep (woke up many times a night) and i really think sleep is important and get real cranky if I don't sleep enough. So after a week.. i stopped.

But I knew all about the drug before taking it, I had carefully researched it and checked the risks and took my blood pressure when I was on it. Most people don't.. they take something without knowing the risks or advised dosage and then things can go wrong.

Not blaming the girl here.. she was too young and maybe did not even know what she was taking. Just saying that even dangerous things can be used if precautions are taken.
