Clinton scores prized endorsement from Gov. Jerry Brown
By MICHAEL R. BLOOD and LISA LERER

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hillary Clinton landed a coveted endorsement from California Gov. Jerry Brown Tuesday, patching up a strained relationship between the two Democrats as she seeks to deliver a final blow to Bernie Sanders' campaign.

Clinton heads into California and the other end-of-the-line primaries June 7 with the Democratic nomination virtually locked up — she needs just 71 delegates to reach the required threshold at the party's summer convention in Philadelphia. But Sanders is staging boisterous rallies across the state and running TV ads in hopes of delivering an upset that he says would strengthen his claim to the nomination, despite the numbers.

While Clinton's campaign has been looking to California as the triumphant conclusion to her primary run, her lead appears to have vanished in recent days. Polling last week showed a race that's nearly tied.

Clinton is still expected to lock up the nomination before the polls close in the Golden State, but a loss in California would amount to a deeply symbolic wound in a state she carried in the 2008 presidential primary against then-Sen. Barack Obama. It would also encourage Sanders to make good on his promise to remain in the race until the party convention in July, hampering Clinton's ability to unify her party and sending her limping into the general election.

While the state has a pronounced Democratic tilt, a Clinton defeat could also embolden Republicans who would love to see her have to defend ground in a state that hasn't sided with a Republican presidential candidate since 1988.

At this point, Clinton is eager to devote her time and money to the campaign against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. But the unexpectedly tough race in California, and her determination to win it, is highlighted in her upcoming schedule — starting Thursday, she's planning events for five consecutive days. She's also running a series of ads targeting black, Latino and Asian-Americans in the state, spending cash she'd hoped to conserve for spots going after Trump.

"I'm feeling very positive about my campaign in California," Clinton said, in an interview with MSNBC on Tuesday. "We are working really hard. I want to cover as much of the state as I possibly can."

With Brown's blessing, Clinton has the support of virtually every major Democrat in California.

In a written statement, the governor stopped just short of saying Sanders should step aside. Instead, he called Clinton's lead "insurmountable," pointed out she had amassed about 3 million more votes than Sanders and argued it was urgent for Democrats to begin focusing solely on Trump.

He said Clinton "has convincingly made the case that she knows how to get things done and has the tenacity and skill to advance the Democratic agenda.

"This is no time for Democrats to keep fighting each other," Brown wrote. "The general election has already begun."

Brown and Clinton's husband, former President Bill Clinton, were bitter rivals in the 1992 presidential contest. During the campaign, Brown at one point said Bill Clinton was becoming "the prince of sleaze."

In one Democratic debate, Brown accused Bill Clinton, then Arkansas' governor, of funneling state business and money to his wife's law firm. The Clintons strongly denounced the accusations.

And at the party's national convention that year, Brown supporters chanting "Let Jerry speak" twice interrupted remarks by Hillary Clinton at a California delegation meeting.

The governor's campaign had similarities to Sanders' outsider bid — a point made by Brown in his endorsement of Clinton. As a candidate in 1992 he railed against America's "corrupted" politics, a line that echoes in Sanders' daily assaults on the intersection of big money and government. Brown called his outsider bid "a cause ... a movement," another line often heard from Sanders in reference to his campaign.

Brown's late-coming endorsement has a practical side. Trump's attacks on the validity of climate change would undercut one of the pillars of Brown's agenda — global warming.

Recent polling finds Clinton is in a virtual tie with Sanders in California; a year ago, by comparison, the Vermont senator registered in single digits in the state. In stop after stop, Sanders has argued that a big win in California would open a pathway to the nomination.

Sanders was planning on rallies in the Democrat-rich areas of northern California Tuesday — Santa Cruz and Monterey.

Poor Cankles.... having trouble putting down a crazy old socialist, getting LESS votes than when she LOST to the upstart punk in 2008. America is TIRED of the same old establishment politicians. Rest assured after being fooled by "hope and change" Barack, our tolerance for double talk is extremely limited.

Hillary owes hundreds of millions in favors to mostly foreign interests..... what little chance of undoing Obama's war on America will be gone with Cankles in the White House.

"As a candidate in 1992 he railed against America's 'corrupted' politics..."

Good to see that he's on board with them now.

His acrimonious exchanges with both Clintons in the past just prove the old chestnut...

In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies, just permanent interests.

Few...outside the Clinton peanut gallery...would consider a Gov. Jerry Brown endorsement...a prize...more like a kiss of death...

Don't be too sure about that.

The old geezer still has some political clout... in California, if nowhere else.

Just the types that would be prospective Hillary voters - and she knows it.

Jerry Brown's endorsement does have some publicity value in La La Land.

The hate oozes from the TV teabaggers.

In California, Republicans make up just 27 percent, barely ahead of independent voters, who make up 24 percent. Voter registration is being dwarfed by the Democratic registration increase over Republicans. The people of California recognize losers when they seem them and Republican are nothing but losers. The Republicans are the party of wingnuts.

Jerry Brown is seen as the most successful Governor in the country. California has been going through a period of prosperity, unlike the states with Republican Governors and legislators run things. The California Democratic Party represents where the rest of the country is ultimately going to end up. (Listen to the wingnuts squeal)

55% of the voters approve of the job Brown is done.

The Republican buffoon has also got some powerful Governor endorsements, like Chris (hand me another burger) Christie, Huckabee, Jindal and Perry. I would characterize that list as pathetic.

One day Republicans will wake up and ask, why do I vote against my own self interest? Why do we support these terrible Governors like Sam Brownback and Scott Walker? What's the name of that idiot in Maine? Or family man Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley who is not only a terrible excuse for a Governor who can't keep his zipper up. Should I go on?

Clinton deserves the Brown endorsement. She will be the Democratic nominee and make a great President.

Republicans are screwed. The worst candidate in history and the rest of the Republican party can't bring itself to get behind this guy. Watch the Republican party dissolve in real time. It's a beautiful thing and soooo deserved.

One day Republicans will wake up and ask, why do I vote against my own self interest?

I have heard this question often over the years and 100% of the time it is asked by liberals.

The reason is a fundamental difference in what is expected of government.

In general, Republicans/conservatives vote for who they think will be best for the country ("make America great again!"). They care about issues like strong national defense and worry about the national debt.

While Democrats/liberals, in general, vote for who will benefit them personally ("we will pay for your college tuition!". They want as much "free" stuff from the government as they can get...education, healthcare, etc. Unions are strong supporters of Democrats because Democrats put money in their pockets.

BTW- I almost forgot Clinton was still in the race. All I read about around here is Trump.

You're spouting the usual Republican party line. Democrats are all takers.

All of the "blue" states are the engines of innovation, commerce, jobs, and growth. On the other hand, "red" states are mostly net welfare states. There goes your argument.

When Romney talked about the 47% who paid no taxes, he was right...he just didn't know he was talking about the Republican party. In of the Southern states, the majority don't pay taxes.

Kansas for example is is bleeding jobs, bleeding revenue, bleeding population, falling behind by every measure since their massive, ideologically driven tax cuts. The Republican experiment gone terribly wrong. Last time the Republicans held the Presidency, they drove the economy of a cliff.

Democrats vote for jobs. President Obama has created more jobs than the last two Republican Presidents combined and the unemployment rate is now lower than it was at anytime during the Reagan Administration.

Republicans could care less about reducing poverty and insuring more people. It's the party of ME. I got mine, screw you.

Republicans hate minorities. Immigrants are ruining everything.

And America is in too few wars according to Republicans. Negotiation is weakness if you're a Republican.

I know you want to forget about Hillary. All Republicans do. It's okay I understand.

Hardly surprising, Hilary organized the numbers, endorsements and super-delegates before running, it was always a done deal regardless of who the voters might want, would take a miracle to stop her winning the Dem nomination. The Clinton Foundation has been busy...

Totally wrong. Jerry Brown is highly accomplished and very well respected. He would have made a great president and he could have won this time if he turn back the clock. Sadly, just too old now.

My guess.... Corrupt Hillary has promised Moonbeam the funds to finish the $67,000,000,000 train to nowhere that will never, ever, EVER operate without horribly expensive subsidies to keep it going. But that doesn't matter- all the bribes and kickbacks have been paid or are in place. This train will be built whether the people of California like it or not.

As a side note, leftists like to rant about how the voters approved the train. The part they leave out is that the voters approved a $6 billion train. I suspect the vote would have had a different outcome had they been told the truth.

If you want to see hate, please refer to Ferguson, Baltimore, outside any Donald Trump rally or anywhere you find a lot of leftists. In the end, when leftists get together, it usually ends up a show of neanderthals engaging in base behavior. Oh, I left out Occupy Wall Street. Whatever happened to those people, anyway? The thing is, many liberals don't even understand self-interest. For example, some think raising the minimum wage to $15 is great self-interest. The problem is, increasing the minimum wage hasn't done anything to increase buying power in actual dollars for over 45 years, In fact, buying power is lower now than it was in 1970. despite numerous increases. Presumably, many leftists then would also applaud Obama increasing food stamp usage by 13,000,000 people since he took office. After all, isn't it in one's best interest to get free stuff they haven't earned? Take illegal immigration. Some hispanics may think it's in their best interest to have an open border. The problem is, when you flood the labor market with uneducated and unskilled labor, it increases supply of said labor and market forces drive the market price for labor down.

Overall, the problem with most leftists is they are very ignorant about rudimentary economics. Thanks to a failed public education system, also run by leftists, most leftists are simply not bright enough to think most issues through beyond what their initial primal thoughts are. Food stamps- yeah! Higher minimum wage- woo hoo! Open borders- ho ho ho! Obamacare- yee haw! A rational person thinks these matters through and sees what a disaster these and other big government liberal ideas have been in reality.

Now tell me.... are you enjoying your $2,500 you're saving on health care premiums?

mopar71 could not have said it better. Most liberals think about themselves and their personal agenda. Sure there maybe certain social issues such as abortion and gay marriage with which I disagree with conservatives but conservative are worried about the future and the debt while liberals seem to think helping everyone today and promising more this and that, paid for with the credit card serves their agenda and promising people things now is what the liberals want. No liberal I know thinks about the 19 Trillion dollar debt or what the means for the future. It's give me something now.
