LONDON: -- A British ex-serviceman abandoned his Mount Everest climb some 500m from the summit to save a fellow mountaineer.

Leslie Binns, 42, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, turned around to save Sunita Hazra, an Indian woman, who was scaling the summit ahead of him.

He said he felt "immensely proud" to have saved a life but wished he could have also helped save another climber, who died on the descent.

It takes a certain special type of human to firstly attempt to Summit Mt. Everest - to sacrifice that dream when so close to the summit to aid another tells us exactly the quality that makes up this gentleman...

Those on this forum who have also knocked the Thai lady who recently summited Everest will never understand this or the specialness involved, these cardboard folk lack in nearly every attribute one usually respects, but excel in anonymous criticism.

Leslie Binns is clearly a hero.

Well done.

Hopefully this Real life Hero will be economically assisted when he attempts the next climb.

Yes, good point, he would have made many sacrifices and not just financial to make his attempt... hope he gets to live his dream somehow.

This is a great story, it's restored my faith in humankind.

Agree.

It is not only a very expensive trip.

The training, planning, organizing, etc, etc, is absolutely amazing.
