More laws discussed for realizing digital economy

BANGKOK, 3 June 2016 (NNT) – The Telecommunications Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage (TCT) has begun discussing what laws need to be amended or revamped to achieve the government’s digital economy goal.

The TCT has organized a seminar under the topic “Digital Laws: Hopes for Reform” to collect opinions on laws and regulations needed for a digital society. The discussion focused on the complex and rapidly change nature of technology and its role in a digital economy. All of the opinions collected from the talk will be forwarded to relevant state agencies.

Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Uttama Sawanayon remarked that concrete changes must take place in a variety of sectors to accommodate a digital economy starting from the infrastructure level upward to the development of human resources.

He let on that 3 bills are currently being reviewed by the National Legislative Assembly and should be put into effect later this year. Three to 4 other pieces of legislation will soon also go to review, all of them having to do with setting up infrastructure for the digital economy. The minister pointed out the government is only facilitating the development, while allowing the private sector to drive it to the sector’s own goals.

Might want to start with revoking the Computer Crimes Act and rewriting it in such a way that writing 'Ja' on facebook will not get you thrown in jail.

Create a law making even thinking about implementing a Single Gateway illegal.

Ditto for a man in the middle interception and decryption of encrypted data/communications by government officials.

Then do something about increasing international capacity so that the quality of internett connection becomes stable and reliable.

We'll never hear it from the government's NNT. But I'd be guessing, the single gateway, Computer Crimes Act enhancements, government censorship and snooping etc. are exactly what's coming in the pending laws.

Note that the OP article doesn't say anything about the content of the pending laws they're referring to.

It does seem that the government's term "Digital Economy" has become a vanilla-flavor pseudonym for all the 1984 technology type stuff they have on their agenda.

Does anyone really think that promoting freedom of expression, protecting online/technology privacy and expanding/modernizing technological capacity is anywhere in these guys' plans?

These idiots have already throttled the gateways. My business is affected EVERY DAY. It is one of the reasons forcing me to leave. For playing around well I have no issues but for Business I have real issues.

This dictatorship is ruining this country and these laws are being covered up to make things harder. Simple.

Like letting foreigners use their computers in public without harassment?

I wish I could believe, but they are a decade behind, and I'm being generous with that.

Even Bangkok Bank uses and ancient computer system.

Simply control freaks,.... this regime would have to bomb the entire nation and the kids to silence the critics.....

That may be in their ultimate game plan, where only a few selected 'good people' are left standing. It certainly seems headed that way.

It sounds to me there is budget to spend for the digital economy and this is about everyone getting their heads in the feeding bowl and getting some action. For example the rural internet to every village; this project is providing lots of work for those out in the countryside where there isn't much farming going on at the moment.
