Registration of “Any ID” e-payment system is voluntary: PM

BANGKOK: Registration of “Any ID” e-payment system which is to start on June 17 onward is voluntary but those who register will be accorded with convenience and the fee for electronic money transfer will be cheaper.

In his weekly nation-wide address in the “Returning Happiness to the People” programme, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha said that the “Any ID” e-payment system is one of the key elements of the government’s “Digital Economy” policy which will be the new engine in driving the country’s economy.

“Any ID”, said the prime minister, is one of the strategic plans for the development of the national e-payment system.

Members of the public can apply for registration at their free will free of charge and they are required to present the following information to authorities concerned: number of the ID card, number of the cellphone and number of the bank account.

The persons who register will be treated with the following conveniences: welfare fund from the government which include pension, social security fund and financial help in case of disaster or crop damages will be transferred directly to their bank accounts; they can transfer money electronically to one another with less transfer fee instead of being charged 25-30 per transfer currently being charged for ATM transfer.

The prime minister said that the government would provide farmers with farming technology to increase their productivity and, at the same time, to cut production cost to between 3,000-3,500 baht per rai through 882 agricultural learning centres.

On top of that, there will be non-formal education learning centres to improve the education of the people and community digital centres to upgrade local administration organizations.

A good question and I have my suspicions that it's more about tracking payments and who gets what / how much.

Who can think this is a good idea, even ignoring the inevitable self-interests and likely corruption involved in selecting/buying the relevant technology and acquisition of whatever is needed to set this up.

Foisting this on the public by an unelected government who seem bent on monitoring its captives' movements socially, can citizens believe that this isn't about monitoring their financial movements too, and knowing where everyone is or has been in their consumer trail. Also many Thais may worry about their tax status being compromised by the government collecting all this information (I think everyone should pay it, but they know where too much of it goes).

Also, who can trust a 'government' that can't even defend its own websites, its police, courts and government department websites from simple attack by disgruntled online groups like Anonymous. Who can really believe their personal information can be kept safe here online?

I have never heard of this scheme, but I am willing to bet it will not apply to Farangs.

I am certain that some group will hack these accounts and cause major problems in the Future If they can hack the US government and banking systems they will have no problem hacking this stupid idea

I hope the government will introduce a government-managed electronic ID and signature system, ideally integrated in the ID card.

This would be a great help for any Thai website requiring ID or age verification.

I like the concept of e-payments but I do not see the importance of data protection is talked about. The attitude "it will be ok" is not sufficient for me to want to purchase anything via the e-payment system.
