A Little Shade for Us Soon-to-be Non-Smokers on the Streets of Chiang Mai?

I had been a non-smoker for quite some time, when I experienced a sudden slight VISA glitch which sent me over the edge, and then one puff led to another.

Until my Visa woe, which proved temporary, I never realized that there are so few places to stand around outside, unless one were willing to stand in a shadeless spot under the sun.

I can imagine that, in the Chiang Mai of 30 years ago, there must have been many shade trees and awnings where men and women could stand and chat. These days, along the busy highways, or just about anywhere in the city, shaded public spots seem to be frightfully few. And of course, if there were a few spots one could find, then they would be of a type which would make me feel too impolite and too intrusive to actually dare to light up. This is a very good thing for the new young generation who have got the message that I never got when I was their age. Smoking is probably one of the most costly useless behaviors that I know. However, it was not until I re-established this behavior that I had hoped had been extinguished that I realized just how few outdoor shady spots with benches there are in this city where one can stop to have a rest and work or think. There are coffee shops, but those are not what I am talking about.

I am wondering why we do not have more public common places which are shaded and have benches. The advantage of these spaces is that they promote public interaction and harmony.

Well of course, it goes without saying, any public parks today would not and should not allow smoking, however I do not even see very many of the smokeless variety.

On the subject of smoking, either in public spaces or clandestinely, I very much agree with all of the government policies put in place to discourage tobacco use, especially by the youth. I have photographed many creative cigarette packages, and have emailed home the images of the gory realities captured on each pack. Thailand is way ahead of America in truth in advertising; it is obvious.

So I guess I am saying that it took my Visa glitch to get me smoking, which got me thinking about standing out in the hot sun with no shade, and that led me to realize that we need more shaded public gathering places here in Chiang Mai.

I do not know where you might put them. However, I do see some open spaces, occasionally, with benches, but these spaces are not covered.

And one thing I DO know is that here in Chiang Mai, when it is not raining, then there is sun, and a very hot sun, as most of us know.

I expect that, now that my reporting fiasco has been solved, I will again become a non-smoker.

One of the things that will help me to quit, again, is that I find it so uncomfortable to stand in the hot sun, especially when we have the high humidity of this Raining Season thrown in.

But after I do quit, if I do quit, I will still remember that one thing this city lacks is enough shade.

Another daily ration of meaningless meandering through pointless omphaloskepsis decorated with a few ersatz factoids made in a factory in Guangzhou by a peasant from Harbin who only sees the final product she assembles in the glittering store windows of places she cannot even set foot inside the door of.

Or a blog and then he could sell ads and maybe make some money.

Oh wait, maybe that's what he's trying to do.

Of course, without good content, ad placement cannot have the desired consequence.

The purpose of posting content is to drive traffic to the site.

It is fortunate that this site is able to attract many talented writers who enlighten the community about information pertinent to daily life in Chiang Mai, as well as drive traffic to the site, and additionally create an income stream which ultimately boosts the local economy, which makes life here just that much more pleasurable for all.

The OP needs to get a life.

I have been on this forum for 13 years and this is the most bored I have been by a consistant poster spouting boring rubbish.

A line from a Boyzone song is relevant here "You say it best, when you say nothing at all"

I don't think the OP was hugged enough as a child.

In case it might be relevant, I was hugged too much.

Which is probably why I now prefer Asia, since I no longer need fear American style excessive hugging. I might have gone to Russia, however they are hopeless huggers. Please recall Dr. Chicago.

I was curious what omphaloskepsis might be, so I Googled it. It sounds bad, but is actually good.

There are some other good and valid points in your posted comment, as usual, however, it requires a bit of thought to decipher your unique phrasing.
