Senior Turkish official says nearly 31 people killed in attack at Istanbul's airport

Hypocrisy Central: Have you ever noticed that when a bomb kills a relatively large number of people in a Middle-Eastern country or a developing country (e.g., South Thailand), the event may warrant a small news article on the back page of a regular Western newspaper; however if a bomb kills a relatively large number of people in a Western country, every main-stream news outlet from CNN to the New York Times make the event Front Page News for the next week as every Western politician and pundit expresses their utter shock concerning the event.

Turkey recently reconciled with Israel after years of strained relations, I wonder if this is significant. As for the attack I've seen film of a Turkish policemen shooting a terrorist but failing to blow his head off, which allowed the injured terrorist to detonate his suicide belt. Lives are lost due to stupid restrictive rules of engagement. The policeman should have finished the terrorist off without having to fear repercussions for so doing.

Partially true but this is the top story everywhere at the moment, probably because of the amount of CCTV released, which is pretty chilling stuff I have to say.

This is terrible news. It is also surprising.

I haven't been to Istanbul for quite a few years, but that airport used to be extremely well guarded by the military. I once went through three check points for both me, my luggage and the vehicle before even reaching the actual airport.

Just watched a news report, the journalist who regular flies in/out from the airport claims only one checkpoint and not required to step out of your vehicle for personal checks and so on. It was claimed the airport is now the third busiest in Europe and 11th worldwide.

There were always variations in the number of checkpoints and sometimes it was down to 1. Sometimes It was a complete search, the taxi was inspected, my luggage was inspected and both I and the taxi driver were checked. Sometimes it was less thorough, but it was there and a reasonably good deterrent at the time.

I wonder where the breakdown was or if ISIS has inside help.

Never had my taxi searched. At best had to show passport, but sometimes without even opening the window. On one occasion, my host drove me himself, and we went through, and straight to an off-limits parking area (host had nothing to do with the airport). Security just waved us in, and we were not contested even once within the terminal.

The military presence in and around the airport is mostly for show, I think. I actually like flying with them, but the airport itself isn't too great.

There was an attack, not that long ago on Istanbul's other airport - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_Sabiha_G%C3%B6k%C3%A7en_Airport_bombing

Doubtful the two are connected. The attack probably took weeks, if not months of planning and arranging logistics.

I also doubt that Turkish security forces were worried about ROE or possible legal consequences.

Turkey is NOT in Europe.

Istanbul is half in Europe

Ninety-five percent of Turkey is in Asia and hopefully, along with 75 million mostly-Muslim Turks, will stay there.

off topic.

but i dont think so any turk trusts the hypocrites in Europe anymore. turks are better outside of sinking Europe like UK. i am sure they do better alone.

hopefully, turks will put the 4 million Syrians into buses and will send them to Europe where the belong and where they want to go though.

and then what Europeans are doing in Asia outside of their continent? Why are they in Turkey or Thailand or in Asia to travel and live? Maybe 'hopefully' they stay in Europe with their pure hypocrisy as european christians and never leave?

Yildirim insisted there was no security lapse at the airport but said the fact that the attackers were carrying weapons "increased the severity" of the attack.

How did the Istanbul airport attackers get past security?

Don't want to be a party pooper but funny how this coincided with Erdogan pleading to Putin to forgive Turkey for the shooting down of the jet and how they must fight terrorism together. Not saying it was Erdogan at all but clearly someone that disagreed with the cap in hand tactic (maybe his son with the convoy oil tanker business ha ha.

The Middle East conflict has been created and manufactured by the West and is now completely out of control. We have the USA supplying arms to Al Qaida to fight Syria and to elements that are basically ISIS. We can never defeat a terrorist organisation with a Trillion dollar military complex behind it.

OOPs does that mean if I enter the USA I must not give my social networking names to the TSA whistling.gif see thread for those behind the drag curve ) ;)

You can rest assured that the US does not particularly care if you are for or against its foreign policy. They care what activities in which you are involved. The TSA does not have access to that information anyway, that would be Homeland Security.

Is there anything else you wish to discuss about the US in a thread about a bombing in Turkey?
