BANGKOK: -- The case of the "Lady" in Bangkok who claims a student and her family stole 10 million baht from her is set to run and run.

Thais can't get enough of the sensational case that pits the poor versus the rich and justice vs injustice, reported Sanook. Everyday there seems to be new revelations and unanswered questions.

What is the relevance of Hong Kong where the "Lady" was trying to persuade the student to go to work? Why have so many people been charged with theft? What are the police doing? Thai society is hanging on every new tidbit of information as a real life soap plays out in the media.

So what are the details?

Nong Koy, the student and her family from Isan went to work with "Khun Ying Kai" -Lady Kai. Koy looked after her cat while mum and dad did chores. Being an attractive young girl who needed money for her engineering degree Lady Kai apparently invited Koy to work in Hong Kong where she could make 2-5 million baht. Not liking the sound of the work Koy consistently refused until it all became too much and she decided to leave by the back door with her folks.

Lady Kai reported that they had stolen gold ingots and other items to the value of ten million baht. Koy was locked up in a women's detention facility for several months ruining her chance of education. She emerged from prison to counter claim that Lady Kai had falsely accused her. Her lawyer Songkan Atchariyasap has appealed not just to police to reexamine the case but to expand the enquiry amid claims of human rights abuses.

Now others are coming forward to say that they have been wrongly imprisoned after Lady Kai accused them of theft in remarkably similar circumstances.

One woman told the lawyer that she did 2 years 6 months inside after Lady Kai accused her of stealing three million baht. Five others have said they were accused and some of these were jailed, it is said.

A hilltribe girl who came to work for Lady Kai with six others claims that after she refused to go abroad to work she was accused of a multi million baht theft and was sentenced to two years prison.

Lady Kai appeared in dark glasses and disguise Monday saying that all the proof is there in a still shot from CCTV that she claims shows student Koy stealing from her. Koy has already said that the family were actually returning a bag to their former employer and that she and her family have been set up and are totally innocent.

Online comment is at fever pitch as the story runs and runs.

If the charges of false accusations are proven, then she should serve at least as much time as those falsely imprisoned, consecutively, before any other charges are added. We all know that justice has very little to do with fairness. OTOH falsely accusing multiple persons causing them to spend years incarcerated, and then being given a suspended sentence hardly seems fair. But that is why I wrote "should" and not "will".

And that is one of the major issues in the justice and enforcement system in Thailand. The basic believe that family, position and money means someone is more right.

I also feel that she should do hard time and the police again took the easy route in prosecuting these girls who obviously by their sheer numbers were not thieves.
