Ms Supinya warns Peace TV blackout may be seen as a double standard practice

BANGKOK: -- The only minority voice in the National Broadcasting Committee who voted against the shutdown of Voice TV warned on Monday that the committee’s decision might be seen as a double standard practice.

Peace TV which is supported by the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship was ordered to be off the air for a month starting on July 10 allegedly for allowing the use of a “rude” wording “Mun” (it) to be on the air.

Ms Supinya Klangnarong who voted against the blackout of the TV station said that the same wording had been allowed to be broadcast by the other TV stations before but none of them were shut down by the NBC.

She disclosed that the NBC didn’t invoke Section 37 of the broadcasting law to deal with Peace TV but resorted to a special law enacted after the coup by the National Council for Peace and Order to deal with the UDD-backed station.

The shutdown order means that Peace TV will be able to resume operation on August 10 – three days after the referendum on August 7, said Ms Supinya, adding that, in her opinion, expressing views about the draft constitution is permissible and is not regarded as a threat to national security.

Whilst I am not a supporter of the UDD I applaud the lone voice in the wilderness, that of Ms Supinya Klangnarong.

But to say this action "may be seen as a double standard practice" demonstrates that she clearly is a master of understatement.

Mun is a mild curse word in Thai language. As the OP suggests just a rude word. It seems that someone was looking for a reason to shut down Peace TV and found a minor infraction to do so. Of course it was politically motivated but that will never be admitted.

One of the few around who will stand up for what she thinks is right no matter who she is up against and without 'political' favour.

So it's ok for a Thai man to belt the tripe out of a woman on those lagorn series but one word Mun gets you a month suspension by way of some obscure law to one again silence any negative opinion in the junta eyes

In a country where people are not permitted to openly voice their opinion about how they are being controlled, the spoken word can be a very powerful and dangerous weapon (especially when one's words can be aimed back at them with malicious intent)!

Unfortunately for Peace TV, they also provided NCPO with the ammunition it needed.

As Peace TV will be able to resume operation three days after the referendum, the special "law" used by NCPO in this case, appears to be nothing more than a "silencer"!

So a non bias person could suggest that every TV station that has had the junta leader on and he uses "rude words" should be shut down for a month also???

And he uses far more "rude words" than "mun".

He may have put him self above the law but the TV station is not...

Yo,, Halloeen, smedly, more selective behavior by government that you guy's supportpost-4641-1156693976.gif

Maybe you care to elaborate, or are you just pulling things out of your rear end?

The UDD calling a tv station "peace" is in itself double standards.

The UDD calling a tv station "peace" is in itself double standards.

Their govt has been removed (again) at the point of a gun and a systematic campaign of revenge and suppression is going on against their side of the political divide without them retaliating violently.

I say they have every right to call their TV station "Peace".

OMG... LOL... And all that stuff.

Someone is actually worried that something may be seen to be a "double standard" in Thailand?

??? A nerveless finger on the pulse of society.

Their activities while their masters, the lords and ladies of misrule, were in power means they are hypocrites to use the word "Peace".

The UDD are a gang of violent street thugs who have no tolerance for opposing views.
