This constitution that contains the clause 49.3 was drafted by Charles de Gaulle and put to a public referendum in 1958, It was adopted by about 83% of voters out of a total voter turnout of about 80%. If majority of French voters now object to this clause they can go through the process to amend the 1958 constitution. In the alternative while the President is directly elected by popular vote, the elected House members can call for a no confidence vote to disrupt the legislative process. But of course it would take a majority vote to do so. And currently that majority seems supportive of the bill. Ultimately it is the French voters who will hold the President accountable through Presidential and House elections. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
manarak Posted July 6, 2016 Share Posted July 6, 2016 this law is much less than what is needed. after all the modifications to preserve some unions' interests, what remains of the law is only a minimal change to the existing labor laws. even with this law, companies still cannot layoff employees they don't want in their company.
