About 40,000 netizens demand NLA to delay amendments to computer crime law

BANGKOK: -- Armed with 40,000 signatures of supporters of an online campaign against Single Gateway, representatives of the netizen’s network on Thursday called on the National Legislative Assembly to delay the deliberation of the amendments to the Computer Crime Act which, they claim, will restrict public’s rights and liberty, particularly free expressions and access to information.

The group, led by Mr Arthit Suriyawongkul, submitted their petition to NLA second vice president Mr Pirasak Porchit to voice their objection against the Single Gateway proposal and to demand that the amendments bill which has passed the first ready be delayed.

The netizen’s network has wanted the NLA’s scrutiny committee to amend sections 14, 15 and 20 of the bill which are deemed restrictive to public’s rights and liberty.

Arthit said that six civic groups and about 22,000 netizens earlier asked the government to withhold the controversial amendments bill with the government pledging to amend the bill in a way that it will not restrict public’s rights and liberty.

About a year afterward on April 21, Arthit said the cabinet endorsed the bill with an introduction of the Single Gateway and submitted it to the NLA for consideration.

The NLA unanimously passed the first reading of the bill which was then sent to the NLA’s scrutiny committee.

Don't these people understand they don't have any rights or liberties under the current ruler? Prayuth doesn't want them to have access to information as that may lead to intelligence and critical thinking. The Junta will give you what you need and tell you what to think

The good PM doesn't give a sh1t about free expression or information. It's all about control. Not surprising given how the military operates, but it's still oppression any way you cut it.

The PM reassured the people of Thailand that the single gateway would still allow users to download pictures and videos of cute, fluffy, kittens. One user remarked, "What else is there, kittens will not be affected, I'm so over joyed, thankyou Genny"

Control is necessary and as an example look at the need to control all these negative videos that go on social media.

isn't it amazing that someone can film a real, genuine incident. post it online and then learn that the police are looking to charge you, and for what simply Telling The Truth ?

Step 2 ban all smart phones that have cameras until the camera is disabled and cannot be re-enabled.

Then put on riot gear as people like a friend of mine will freak out when she can't send photos of her breakfast and cup of coffee.

Wait for rumours to start flying that actually this is a well organised attempt by certain groups to undermine the governments authority. These people are paid red shirt sleeper spies, led by the ghost of Seh Daeng, paid by money from Thaksin, maybe they need attitude adjustment. Good Thais will understand why their liberties must be withheld for the greater good. Long Live the Junta!

Or just simply shut down Thailand's network and telecommunications system...

Don't people understand that their rights and freedoms have never been so great as under Prayut?

Prayut has said so. Repeatedly.

Don 't people understand that the 2016 draft charter will guarantee greater rights than all previous constitutions?

Meechai has said so. Repeatedly.

Every military ruler of the nation have said so after every coup. Repeatedly.

Yes this will play out just like the submarine purchase. They assured people that they would shelve the idea and it would be a non starter. Bang 2 months later it was out of the blue a passed law done deal and this will play out the same way. Bang there you got it live with it. Totalitaranism at is finest.

Or upload pictures using policemen profiles.

From what I understood they cannot have a functioning internet and a single gateway, it isn't feasible. I would assume they have dropped that part of the computer crimes act unless they just want to go ahead and have the first country on earth with no internet, I think even North Korea has something going, so that would be pretty extreme.

Most of Thailand is heavily dependent on internet signal going out of the country, including the banks and financial institutions and many pretty huge businesses that make the country work, so it isn't like you'd just be taking away people's facebook and Thaivisa by setting up the single gateway. But who knows what they really mean by single gateway, one for the banks and one one for us? I would guess that's what's in the cards if they are serious about single gateway. It doesn't seem it would be out of the question that they'd try and basically cancel the internet and cancel the 21st century in Thailand.
