Elephant killed by electric shock while crossing road

NAKHON NAYOK: -- A 7-year-old elephant died from electric shock after it was led across a road in Nakhon Nayok town today.

The male elephant, Permpoon, was crossing a traffic island with the mahout on its back when it touched a power cable near a power post.

Upon contacting the cable, the elephant trumpeted and collapsed on the ground with the mahout throwing out.

The mahout, Pongpan ฺBaworn, was not hurt.

He rushed to the injured elephant but couldn’t help but just sobbed by its side and watch it dying.

Eyewitnesses later alerted local authorities for help.

It took hours before electricity men would arrive to cut power supply on the spot, and was too late for rescue to salvage its life.

Several telecommunication cables were also seen hanging down from the post.

A Nakhon Nayok veterinarian said he needed to check if the mahout had any official document to bring the elephant out its place.

If he has no official permit, he would be charged, the officer said.

He also said an autopsy would be conducted to find the cause of its death by the Kasetsart animal hospital in Kamphaengsaen district of Nakhon Pathom.[/img[

It's the mahouts fault... nothing about uninsulated, low quality, low hanging power cables...
And WHY the hell did it take hours for PEA to get workers there? They have workers in all ampoe that are on call 24/7 so they should have been there in 5-15 minutes!?

A sad sight to see , makes you wonder about Thailand , that very well could have been a person touching that live power cable , not that , that should alter the course of events , just why was this cable in such a position as to electrocute the elephant in the first place, and who placed it there............................................coffee1.gif

Why is the elephant in town in the first place?

I hope it wasn't there for the purpose of raising money from tourists because I thought that evil practice was banned years ago.

If he was then I just wonder what punishment he will receive.

Mahouts are suppose to love and care for their elephants but just like dodgy monks there's plenty around.

Just a week or two ago Bill Gates warned about hanging wires,

Thais seem to have a complete disregard about the safety issues

with electricity, maybe because they cannot see it ! how many times

have you been walking on the path in the rain,to find cables fixed

together with bits of plastic bags, markets and fairs seem to be the

most dangerous.

R.I.P poor Elephant, you did not deserve such a death.

Always deflect from the real problem and pick the poor helpless low hanging fruit. Case solved.

Because they're lazy care-less c#nts is why. Third world infrastructure and NO empathy toward other sentient beings, even those from their own species.

Well, once Khun Nakhon Nayok is through with this bull....it he might go and learn English; then he can go and check if what Bill Gates said is legal or not. Thereafter defrock Bill Gates, throw him into the slammer for, say 16'419 years and make sure that all legal copies of Windows (all versions) are deleted and replaced with bootlegged stuff.

PS: Silly me, latter is not possible as this has been informed by the Ministry of Piratery!

While some people try to make (common sense) ends meet - there comes Somchai to move the ends! Welcome to Thailand.

We can wonder if the elephant should have been there or not, but we can be ABSOLUTELY SURE that the live cable should not have been left in a position to electrocute it or any other reasonably tall animal or person (a 7 year old elephant is no taller than an adult man of average Western height).

So while we wonder whether or not to blame the mahout, we know for sure that PEA IS CULPABLE.

If the mahout was sitting on the elephant, shouldn't he have been electrocuted too

Unlikely! Assuming the elephant's trunk touched the live cable, power would have flown from there through the elephant's feet into the ground. This must have effected the elephant's heart that is more less in between the points flow.

The mahout sitting on top might have felt something in his legs or bum, but his heart would have been outside the flow of power. Very different story if the mahout would have touched a metal object connected to the ground with his hand. Than the power would have also flown from the elephant's trunk through the man's legs and through the arm into the ground, affecting the man's heart.

On a more happy note. Lets have Paul Barton, who made it his mission to play music to elephants in Thailand.

No local agencies show responsibilities yet to elephant’s death from electric shock

539_elephant-1-wpcf_728x409.jpg

NAKHON NAYOK: -- As no local and central government agencies have so far come out to show responsibilities to the death of the poor bull elephant in an electric shock while walking pass an electric post on the road island in Nakhon Nayok town, the police said they were not investigating the cause of death but would question the owner as the law prohibits anyone from bringing elephant to wander around for money.

Nakhon Nayok police chief Pol Col Kosit Boontawee said the police would only look into the law which prohibits bringing elephant out to wander around for money.

But for its death, the police would only inform the Kasetsart animal hospital in Nakhon Pathom to conduct autopsy to conclude its death cause.

However the owner has contacted the police to bring the carcass back to home for religious ceremony, he said.

It remained unclear of which agency should be held responsible for the electrical leakage that killed the elephant, Permpoon.

The 7-year-old elephant died from electric shock while it was crossing a traffic island with the mahout on its back.

It touched a power cable near a power post, and collapsed.

The mahout, Pongpan ฺBaworn, was not hurt.

Several telecommunication cables were also seen hanging down from the post.

It remained unclear today of which agency should be held responsible for the electrical leakage that killed the elephant, Permpoon.

Nakhon Nayok highway authorities confirmed its power post has no electrical leakage.

But on the scene inspection by Thai PBS reporter showed several cables laid overhead from a power pole on the sidewalk to the troubled electric post of the Highway Department on the traffic island and were hanging down.

The cables were marked with sign that they belonged to Nakhon Nayok Municipality.

Deputy manager of Nakhon Nayok electricity station Mr Rithee Intiworn said the cables were old and worn out after long use.

It was possible that it might leak at the connected point which were sealed with tapes during rainy season.

Therefore electric shock was likely a cause of the elephant ‘s death.

Nakhon Nayok highway director Praijit Potichan said his technicians have examined the power post andvdud not find leakage from any equioments fixed to the post.

But they noticed several cables that were connected to the post and hanging down could cause the shock.

It was not yet known they belonged to which agency, he said.

Nakhon Nayok mayor Yongyos Isarasenarak assured that the city administration did not connect the cables with the post for lighting decoration purposes.

^^ They might be waiting for more traditional tunes... laugh.png

This one showed some response…although I'd love to know if sucking on one's own trunk means…."man, thank you for trying, but that sucks".

The Telecommunication cables would not have done anything. It is very low voltage. It isn't surprising that no one has accepted responsibility, no one accepted it when the 17 children died up North so why would they for an elephant?

Apparently the elephant is blind and only coils its trunk like that when hearing music... It seems mesmerised by the sound.

Life is Soooo cheap here ,,Just Deny and everything is fine,,,,17 children death ,,,elephant death,,,WHO CARES,,,,People /organisations should be held accountable for their Lazy Non caring/Non safety/Non Maintenance attitude,,,Get Real, lock up the killing pricks,,

Actually WHO "World Health Organization" probably does care. Well about the 17 hilktribe kids, if not the fact that a human could have touched that cable instead of an elephant.
