UK: Angela Eagle launches Labour leadership bid to topple Jeremy Corbyn

LONDON: -- Labour’s Angela Eagle has said she will challenge Jeremy Corbyn for the leadership of Britain’s main opposition party.

The widely-anticipated challenge to Britain’s main opposition leader follows a collapse in support for Corbyn among Labour politicians in parliament.

However he is refusing to resign and insists he can win a leadership battle which will be decided by a vote of the party membership. Thousands of new members have joined, with many believed to back him.

His rival Angela Eagle, a former shadow business secretary, accuses Corbyn of playing to his left-wing gallery rather than seeking wider support.

“Jeremy Corbyn is unable to provide the leadership that this huge task needs,” she told a news conference. “I am not here for a Labour Party that just takes part, I’m here to win.”

Jeremy Corbyn has rejected criticism that his campaigning in favour of the UK’s EU membership was at best lukewarm.

The threat of a split in Britain’s main opposition party further complicates the political scene after the referendum vote for Brexit.

Its a pity that labour can't come up with some-one better than Angela Eagle, she doesn't look leader material to me, but anyone is an improvement on Corbyn. Pity Hilary Benn isn't interested in the job, he would have made a great leader and statesman.

He is right IMO, he will easily win if the vote is decided by the party membership--(i.e the man in the street) he will lose if its left to the elite--MPs -many just placed there (like Kinnock's,---sorry Baron Kinnock's son) or headed there like Blair's son...etc (Tony Blair’s son Euan could be 'parachuted into safe Labour seat) who are completely out of touch---their job now is to make sure the people don't get to decide who they want to lead them....& quite possibly they will succeed in this..................coffee1.gif

That photo is scary.

Labour have lost the plot, first they elect a leader Corbyn who is a total dinarsor.

Now a woman who looks so scary. I would not want to wake up next to her.

This 'dinosaur' won by a landslide and these careerist backstabbing neo liberal blairites are attempting a coup against the will of the people (ring any bells?) Ten thousand people marched on Parliament Square to support him and revolt against this attempt to forcibly remove him against the will of the people. Bet you're right at home here aren't you dry.png

Only because the marxist unions are running labour, it's about time they seperated, the unions are splitting labour and the country.

The leaders of the unions are far from Marxist! Like politicians, they're only interested in their own power and wealth.

You keep thinking that, if thats what you want to believe. Why should Len McCluskey be having meetings with the labour party telling them who he wants as leader, makes me sick. The unions have done enough damage to the country already.

I don't know much about Corbyn, but before he became top banana in the labour party he was in full agreement that us expats in Thailand should receive all yearly increases same as UK dwellers, so not all bad, unlike that b...std blair who took a delegation to Brussels to make sure we did'nt receive this increase, whether Corbyn would have done this, we won't know!

How does that detract from my point that union leadership are only interested in their own power and personal wealth?

Hardly a doctrine from Marx' beliefs - which is why I said they are FAR from Marxist!

Oh don't be so pedantic, if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, its a duck!

Labor is being infiltrated, again, by the loony left. Of course Corbyn and his allies never left and are a throwback to the previous infiltration.

Thousands of people joined the party just to vote for Corbyn before. Now thousands are doing so again. Do you think that's all spontaneous?

The Unions vote for him because they feel they can control him.

He's a principled guy for sure but is leaving in the 70's and still thinks the brand of soviet communism forced on East European states in the past works.

Labor needs a leader for the modern times and needs to innovate socialism for the modern age but the extreme left will do all they can to stop that. Their vision has never changed even though it's been proven not to work for so many times.

Without a really effective opposition the country will move more and more to the right.

I would be curious to know how many joined the labour party just to vote him out though.

That is the whole point, the party membership is exactly the opposite of "The man in the street" ie the ordinary voter, who is totally unimpressed by Corbyn and won't vote for him. This is Labour's problem, and why the PLP have largely deserted him, because they wan't to keep their jobs. A very significant proportion of the party members are £3 voters, enthusiastic young left wing idealists who can't understand that electing someone on the far left has it's price.

Labour party reverts back to the days of real Labour with death threats and party offices trashed...

Jeremy Corbyn has called for "calm" and "dignity" from Labour members after leadership challenger Angela Eagle's constituency office was vandalised.

A brick was thrown through the window of the constituency office on Monday.

Mr Corbyn said that "as someone who has received death threats this week" he condemned the "threatening act" and the other "abuse and threats" MPs faced.

The Labour leader urged members and supporters to "treat each other with respect and dignity".

Thought that read Angela Merkel for a minute! rolleyes.gif

But anyone but anti-Brit Corbyn... he'd scrap Trident at the earliest opportunity if he ever got in and would invite all 'n sundry in, the tree-huggin' lefty jessie!

Speakin of Murky, I spotted some dozy op ed with a picture of the three old hags Merkel, May and Clinton, proposing something along the lines of 'wimmin's turn at the helm' or some such tripe. Fair made me shudder. Ugh.coffee1.gif
