New Pailin-Koh Kong Road Planned

A new road linking Pailin province to the coastal province of Koh Kong has been planned, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transportation, aimed at helping agricultural products from the northern provinces reach sea ports quicker. Vasim Sorya, the director-general of administration at the Ministry of Public Works, said the plan to build the new road from Pailin to Koh Kong was being studied, aimed at increasing exports.

“Now we plan to construct two new roads, one from Pursat or Battambang to Koh Kong and the second from Pailin province to Koh Kong,” Mr. Sorya said. The new road project will take up to five years to complete and will need a budget before work can start, Mr. Sorya said, without giving any details of the estimated cost.

The new road from Pailin to Koh Kong will help farmers transport their products to be exported, Mr. Sorya said. But he did not comment on the difficulties faced by producers wanting to transport their agricultural products to Thailand’s Laem Chabang deep sea port. “We have been trying to set up transportation links to neighboring countries and have seen positive progress, especially with Vietnam,” Mr. Sorya said. “But with Thailand we still have problems.
