Phuket readies for five-day holiday

PHUKET: Many Thais will enjoy five days off starting this weekend as the nation prepares to celebrate the major Buddhist holiday for month of July.

Government offices will be closed for three days next week in honour of the holy Buddhist holiday Asanha Bucha on Tuesday (July 19) and Buddhist Lent, in Thai Wan Khao Phansa, on Wednesday (July 20).
Although Monday (July 18) does not hold any religious or festive significance, Prime Minister Gen Prayuth Chan-o-cha on May 18 last year announced that this coming Monday is to be a special day off in addition to the existing holiday “in order to boost economy and promote tourism”.
All major government offices, including immigration and district offices, will be closed over the holiday, and re-open on Thursday (July 21).

Of course Phuket has a majority Muslim population, and therefore the buddhist celebrations are a minority feature of the Island.

Phuket is far from having a Muslim majority though a few areas like Kamala, Surin Beach, and Bang Tao are predominantly Muslim

Mosques outnumber Temples in Phuket which should give you an indication how many Muslims live on the Island. Just travel round, and count .. you will be surprised ! The unofficial number 60% of the population, though it could be slightly less.

Rubbish!!

Even your own link states the Muslim population is about 25-30 %. Other sources say about 20%.
