PHUKET: The chief of the Provincial Police has ordered every police station on the island to set up security checkpoints in their area to ensure maximum security is provided for residents and tourists following the attacked in Nice on Friday morning (July 15).

In addition, he has requested that business operators report any suspicious activities to authorities immediately.

Provincial Police Chief Col Teerapol Thipjaroen yesterday (July 15) gave an order to all police departments on the island to ramp up their security effort to provide safety to residents and tourists following the tragic incident in Nice where the suspect drove a lorry into crowds of people while they were celebrating France’s national day.

Col Teerapol explained, “To keep Phuket safe, officials must be vigilant when patrolling their area and must keep up with the security effort. I have ordered every department to set up checkpoints in all areas leading in and out of tourist areas.

“I have requested Immigration Police be posted at the main checkpoint and at the airport. The customs office have also been advised to be on the look out for any suspicious packages and there will be an increase in the number of checkpoint set up across the island especially in areas with lots of tourists such as Patong, Karon and Kamala.

The Nice driver forgot that you do a runner and then turn up 3 days later blaming break failure.

You must be describing the French police, because it seems that in Nice the truck also had passed before any action could be taken.

From what I've seen many times at checkpoints, locals are stopped and fined in greater numbers than tourists and expats. A tourist with no helmet will certainly attract a fine at a checkpoint, as will a Thai.

Usually, I'm just waived through checkpoints while nearly every Thai is stopped. In the past couple of years, I think I've been stopped twice to check my license, while being waived through countless times.

Honestly, what difference would these checkpoints make, do they believe a driver would announce he his going to run down people. Another publicity stunt by those who don't know what policing is all about.

Unfortunately Thailand is a soft target for terrorists.Luckily up to now the Muslim seperatives have not really targeted the country as a whole.The borders are very porous and any weapons needed easily got.Im sure it will happen one day,surprised it hasn't happened already.As for other terrorist groups Thailand is wide open.Having a mostly very laid back police force who don't seem to spend enough time out on the streets except for their own ends is not going to help. Check points are easily got round and if anyone chose a truck as a weapon how are they going to deal with that.... Trucks everywhere.
