Some 100,000 policemen to be deployed on referendum day



BANGKOK: -- Over 100,000 policemen will be deployed across the country to ensure peace and order on August 7 when people go to the polls to vote on the draft charter, Pol Maj-Gen Piyaphan Pingmuang, deputy spokesman of the National Police Office, said on Monday.

All the policemen have been instructed to perform their duties with impartiality and that the policemen are free to vote whichever way they like, he added.’

The deputy spokesman disclosed that police had taken legal actions against seven individuals who were caught destroying voter’s lists although all of them were unaware that their acts were illegal and none of them have any links with elements opposing the referendum.

He went on saying that distribution of documents containing distorted or misleading draft charter still continued in some northern provinces but initial police findings did not find any connections with groups or movements bent on undermining the referendum.

They're possibly the inactive ones, which means they're probably criminals, which means the junta is having criminals looking after the vote...

And that's only the police. What about the Army? How many soldiers will be manning polling booths in full combat gear and carrying automatic weapons?

Will military personnel have the freedom to make their own choice when it comes to voting or will the the Supreme Commander be issuing orders which must be obeyed?

Hope this intimidation goes so far that people boycott the whole thing.

Farcical absolutely farcical.

The overflowing inactive post room will be empty for once.

This government are showing their true colours now.

What a lot of fuss about nothing.

This daft referendum is just a charade - voting for yet another constitution is completely pointless because the army always rips up constitutions whenever any other political group becomes too popular.

That's not even half the police available. What are the rest going to do. I would have thought that there would be more than this number working on a normal day.

• Sit under trees.
• Chat on their smartphones.
• Intimidate bike users for money (especially 2nd half of the month when the salary has disappeared).
• Meet their 'kiks'. (like point 3, intimidation usually works best here)
• Avoid speaking with foreigners.

These are the main ones I can remember. There are obviously other great jobs they do.

What scares me is the threat of pensioners playing Bridge whilst the plod are all on guard duty.

And 'The People' have all read this before they vote in a meaningful way ? A lot of people around our way can't even read !

Yes because they rarely leave the confines of their police stations. I swear, Thai cops are the most useless law enforcement officers on the planet.

100,000 police? 65 Million population? That must be about every police officer in the country!

I didn't even know there were 100,000 policemen in Thailand.

Now that's a fair point.... With their seemingly almost non presence, it got me wondering.

230,000 officers.... So with sick leave, admin leave, normal leave... And of course, I'm just leaving for the day leave...., 100,000 of them is a good turnout..... although I suspect that the number refers more directly to the actual number of officers working on the day, vs the number engaged in safeguarding polling stations.

Now to find out how many polling stations will be open

Conducting interprovincial searches for foreigners that perform sexual acts in public apparently!

If you are suggesting they don't do much any other day just wait until the new Pokemon game hits Thailand in September. Then it will really be full time eyes down in the office except for doing the monthly rounds.

My guess is Pokemon will ultimately be Section 44'd because of a dramatic drop in national productivity.
