BANGKOK: -- Bangkok police have arrested another bogus cop - but this man was making a living out of it.

He was running an escort service - not of the girls for hire variety but leading convoys of buses, reported Daily News.

He had fitted out a Toyota Camry with red flashing lights and all the 191 insignia and was dressed in all the gear of a special forces man.

Police in eastern Bangkok had become aware of the activities of 52 year old Worawut Thammang who comes from Jom Thong, Bangkok. He was arrested yesterday evening as he was escorting a bus along the Boromratchachonanee Road in Thaweewatana district.

His car had all the trappings of a 191 special patrol vehicle - the pink insignia on the side, the 191 number and the red lights fixed to the roof. Inside they found uniforms, radios and several different kinds of police ID including tourist police documents.

Piyarat Wetsakoson said that the man was an impersonator who had been making a living out of driving around pretending to be a policeman. He said that his job was to provide police escorts for buses and convoys.

He was charged with three offences - impersonating a policeman, having red warning lights on a car without permission and being in possession of police radios without permission.

Another man was arrested earlier in the week with a fake police uniform and ID - but he said that he just liked to wear the uniform to impress friends and didn't impersonate an officer for financial gain.

Setting the blatant corruption in this sentence aside, since it goes hand in hand in this smirking country....you'd think impersonating a police officer would be primarily because of wielding authoritarian power over finacial gains...

Wife pointed out the cruise control and I gave the guy a raised eyebrow stare, and he abandoned the whole thing, and off we went. Convinced he was either a bogus cop, or maybe a "real" cop trying to make some extra cash?

True. As I was slowing down, I was telling my wife it looked pretty dodgy but I rolled the dice and stopped.

1. Real cops, not corrupted

2. Real cops who take bribes

3. Real cops doing off duty work in uniform, pocketing the profit

4. Fake cops charging for real cop services

5. Fake cops who can't afford a Toyota pickup truck so impresses girlfriend with police uniform instead

They knew he was a fake cop because he was offered a bribe and refused. An obvious mistake for an amateur due to not having paid for his position.

I wonder how he made contact with his customers. Wouldn't they call the police to request such service, or wouldn't the TAT be involved in arranging those escorts?

Anyway, I guess he's been doing it for so long, he feels like the real thing and not worried about any real trouble -- looks to be sitting there calmly using his mobile phone.

And that is exactly right. So many Thai police appear to be direct descendants of the UK Highway robbers of old - Stop, stand and deliver. No different at all.
