BANGKOK: -- Military officers today escorted the Chiang Mai provincial administration organization (PAO) chief Boonlert Buranupakorn to Bangkok for questioning over the recent seizures of documents allegedly distorting the draft charter which is set to be put for vote in the August 7 referendum.

Mr Boonlert returned from the United States on a flight to Chiang Mai international airport this morning.

He was immediately escorted by military officers to board a Lion Air flight SL525 to Don Mueang airport for questioning at the Army Area 11 headquarters.

He left Thailand on July 19 for United States to spend his annual holidays and visit his daughter who is studying there.

Boonlert is among 11 suspects wanted for questioning by the National Council for Peace and Order over alleged connection in the distorted documents.

He was earlier suspended from duty without pay by the prime minister pending the questioning.

The move came after authorities discovered thousands of envelopes bearing the addresses of residents and letters indicating the disadvantages of the draft charter during raids on six locations in Muang district of Chiang Mai.

One of the raided targets was Chiang Mai Tassanaporn Co — a wood furniture manufacturer and exporter run by Boonlert Buranupakorn, president of the Chiang Mai PAO.

Mr Boonlert’s family has been closely connected with the Pheu Thai Party.

Apart from a bit more retribution I really can't see the point of this exercise, as far as spreading any type of information amongst Thais goes the bamboo telegraph ( also known as word of mouth ) will spread it quicker than any letter.

"He was immediately escorted by military officers to board a Lion Air flight SL525 to Don Mueang airport for questioning ..."

It doesn't look like there was any rush to get him to the destination on time.

Maybe reconciliation in Thailand is closer than we think, as both sides of the political divide (red and yellow) come together and unite against the common foe!

attachicon.gifreconciliation_1.jpg

-------------------------------------

As usual they will unite not for but against the common people.

We all know that the reality in Thailand is that a wealthy clique acually runs the ountry for their own benefit, both financially and politically.

THings are getting moe ineresting dsy by dsy as we come to the so-called referendum.

Those with control on the political and financial strings are noy gpong tp give ip vontrol easily.

That is good, and I hope it forcess the Thai Baht exchange rate versus the Dollar and the pound lower.

We shal see what happens.

Perhaps if you read a bit more than this article..................other articles are describing thousands of letters making spurious claims that B30 healthcare, old age allowance and free schooling will all be cancelled, that very large quantities of stationery same as the letters/envelopes were bought by these people, and also found in their possession.

You might think it unlikely than trusted PTP MPs and appointed officials would lie to gain political advantage, but you would be very much in the minority.

OMG! They were caught in possession of stationary! Obviously they are dangerous criminals!

I don't trust politicians, but I also don't trust a government in the hands of a corrupt military. I trust facts from credible sources. Do you have any?

No they were caught in possession of stationery. I can't link to BP, even less so to yesterday's, but the BIB found a huge order of envelopes of the same type as those used was made by the defendants. If innocent, I'm sure they can explain what they did with ~50,000 envelopes. If not, they will lie about it, same as they did in the letters.

So the Chief of the Chiang Mai provincial administration organization, or someone in his office, placed an order for a lot of envelopes, and you think this justifies hauling him and others off for trial in a military court. Do you realize how absurd that is?

According to the full article:

"The move came after authorities discovered thousands of envelopes bearing the addresses of residents and letters indicating the disadvantages of the draft charter during raids on six locations in Muang district of Chiang Mai."

No mention of distortions of the draft constitution, just "indicating the disadvantages". Very Orwellian.

Now it seems they will be tried in a military court http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/07/thailand-opposition-figures-military-court-160728134234938.html for the crime of disseminating information and/or opinions about the draft constitution. Do you really think this is defensible?
