More than 40 workers at the Grand East Footwear International factory in Kandal province’s Ang Snoul district fainted yesterday for the third time in less than two weeks, which police blamed on superstition. The Labor Ministry’s National Social Security Fund (NSSF) reported yesterday that 44 workers fainted at about 12:30pm yesterday after more than 100 workers had fainted on two separate occasions last week.

“The fainting was caused by superstition. They heard the voice of workers from the building A shouting that a ghost spirit went into a worker’s body and then other workers got frightened and started falling down on the ground, losing consciousness one after the other,” read the report. It added that NSSF officials in Kandal province quickly went to the aid of workers and sent them to a hospital with most having quickly recovered before returning home.

A district police official who declined to be named said that after lunch the workers returned to their workplaces, but then someone yelled that a spirit had taken over workers’ bodies because some sang, danced, demanded water or requested special clothes. He said that after they performed the activities, they fell to the ground and other workers followed suit out of fear.
