Traffic police officer admired for issuing traffic ticket to national police chief’s son

BANGKOK: -- The Royal Thai Police yesterday admired a traffic police officer for issuing a traffic ticket to the youngest son of the national police chief after he drove his car into the bus lane.

His father, the commissioner of the Royal Thai Police, later came to the police station and paid the fine for his son.

Admiration of Pol Senior Sergeant Major Somboon Kruethi, chief of the Phyathai police station’s traffic unit, was disclosed by deputy spokesman of the Royal Thai Police Pol Col Krisana Patanacharoen at yesterday’s press conference following a news report that the traffic officer issued traffic ticket to the national police chief’s son, Chaitat or “Hand” Chaijinda after he drove into the bus lane.

The deputy spokesman said the incident happened on July 27 when Mr Chaitat drove along the inbound traffic lane on New Phetburi road on the way to Pratunam.

He said this four-lane traffic road was arranged for three outbound traffic and one inbound traffic for bus.

However Mr Chaitat drove into Pratunam using the inbound traffic lane arranged only for bus.

He was stopped by the officer and received a traffic ticket to pay fine at the Phyathai police station, the spokesman said.

He said after the national police chief learned of the incident, he went there and paid the 300- baht fine for his son.

Pol Col Krisana said this was a normal traffic case and served as a good precedent for all drivers that they must observe the law.

He admired the traffic officer for treating all traffic cases equally with no double standard even though the traffic violator is the son of the national police chief.

Besides, he said the driver also did not expose or show he is the son of the national police chief, he said.

He then told all police to enforce the law strictly with no discrimination.

The national police chief always liked to drive in his private car by himself  alone without police escorts during holidays, he said.

The BIB are regularly  '  urged  '  to do their job and now admire one that actually does  !

Is it genuine admiration for doing his job or for having the balls to ticket the national chief's son when so many others wouldn't have  ?

Admired for doing his job?

So police chiefs boss, he is not above the law.

Maybe thinks he is, he broke the law, so he has to pay.

Daddy used his brain, paid the fine.

Why did daddy go to pay?

Perhaps i am being too cynical but its amazing coincidence feel good and positive stories like this, which could illustrate 'reform' suddenly appear in the days coming up to the referendum.

Son didn't learn anything because daddy came to pay his fine.

It was a 300 baht fine...do you really think paying it himself would have tsught him a lesson?

Having to actually front up and take responsibility wouldn't have done any harm.

'  Protected  '  from responsibility and loss of face by daddy who would have had everyone bowing and scraping because of who he is.

What will he do in later life when daddy isn't there  ?

You all missed the fact the kid didn't  say who his father is, good on the kid, but I do wonder that if he had, would we have this story. I still recall one copper getting blasted by some high ranking dick, who'd been pulled over, who the cop didn't  recognise. This dick wasn't  chastised or penalised.

Can Thai pay their own traffic fines?

I don't know why this young man did not pay the 300 baht himself.

If he did not have the money then maybe his father was already  raising him properly and not spoiling him as you suggest.

Show me a father anywhere that does not bail their kids out of jail.

its part of being a parent...which possibly you are not.

So he didn't have to hand over his drivers license and then go find the police station to get it back?

This is the option they have given me when I didn't want to pay the fine on the spot?

RTP would not miss a photo-ops, would they? What a way to pat oneself on its own back. I am not quite sure how many people would buy into this self marketing. To repair its image, they better do a lot more than this...

Red Bull, Koh Tao... just came to mind!

It was a traffic fine not a question of bailing the boy out of custody.

"Besides, he said the driver also did not expose or show he is the son of the national police chief, he said."

Am I missing something here?  He didn't know who the driver was when he issued the ticket so what exactly did he do that makes him worthy of all this admiration?

The lust for favourable publicity and it's gone wrong.        Just another motorist supposedly then they find out it's the boss' son so the cop's a hero  ?

If the son had paid the fine himself would this ever have come to light  ?

 Read the article carefully:

"Besides, he said the driver also did not expose or show he is the son of the national police chief, he said"

If he had properly identified himself as the son of the national police chief a trip to the police station by Daddy would have been unnecessary. The lesson learnt here is that if high-society always identify yourself for special treatment and Thai understanding.

The article headline is misleading as the officer didn't know who the  guy was (as Rorri pointed out above), so the whole thing is a non-event really,

Makes me wonder if the BIB chief,  or one of his staff,  saw this is an ideal opportunity to create publicity out of nothing so maybe that's why he went to pay the ticket and the media were informed accordingly.

Do you mean the situation videoed last year when the senior officer berated cops on a roadblock for not recognizing him then issued instructions that photos of seniors officers and their car numbers should be memorized  ?     Disgusting abuse of authority but as you say no suggestion he was sanctioned in any way.

Intuition tells me this is pure PR spin conjured up to try to build a bridge between Hi and LoSo, demonstrate reform, etc.

When you look around the streets and highways when cops are dishing out "justice", you just know the whole shebang is just a bribe me dog and pony show. Sorry to be cynical but the corruption in this sector is as alive and well as it always has been. This is just a plain and simple window dressing stunt.

His father made sure that the police now know the son's connections. You don't think police will hesitate the next time the son is violating traffic laws?

Why did the son NOT identify himself?

You have already stated that had he done so then he would have avoided the ticket...so why did he not identify himself?

You seem to have all the answers so I am counting on you to have this one as well.

Yeah.  Nicely constructed propaganda article, making sure to save face all around, including the son.

Yay police.

No, you aren't missing anything. But, he must have recognized the name of the driver when he asked for his drivers license. He may have said to the lad "Oh, you have the same name as my big boss" or some such comment. It is noteworthy that the lad did not make the usual "Do you know who my father is?" comment, although that question often brings interesting answers.

Daddy paid the kid's fine.

Reminds me of my wife getting a ticket for running a red light. She wanted me to give her the money to pay the fine. I told her that a fine is to teach a person not to do something. I don't need to pay the fine since I already know not to run red lights. Wonder what lesson the kid learned.
