Thailand is having a referendum on a new constitution on Sunday 7 August 2016.

BANGKOK: -- The Danish and Finnish Embassies in Bangkok advice citizens living in or visiting Thailand to be alert and take precautions prior to, and during the referendum.

Because of current political tensions in Thailand, unrest might occur up to, and during the polls, both embassies warns. Foreign citizens in Thailand are therefore adviced to avoid potential demonstrations and large crowds, and observe the advice of local authorities and local media.

Related to the referendum, certain restrictions might be imposed, such as sale of alcohol. Such restrictions are usually enforced the evening before the election day, and last until midnight the day after the election.

After political turmoil in 2014, a government formed by the Royal Thai Army, took office.

The current government promised to organize an election, but these plans have been postponed due to the upcoming referendum, in which a new constitution for Thailand, drafted by the current government, is on election.

The current constitution was adopted in 2007. If the new constitution is passed it will be the 20th in the history of Thailand.

Yawn! ????

Talk about a sanitised version of recent history... That has to be up there with 'After political turmoil in 1933, Adolf Hitler formed a government and was in turn succeeded in 1945 by Karl Dönitz'.

The current constitution is the NCPO 2016 Provisional Charter that resulted from an amendment to the NCPO 2014 Interim Charter. The Interim Charter replaced the 2007 Constitution when the NCPO abolished it in May 2014.

I've taken precautions by buying beer beforehand. No worries.
