BANGKOK: -- Met police have a reason to smile. An initiative to relieve traffic congestion has been a great success - and now they have received a brand new pick up.

Metropolitan police commissioner Sanit Mahathavorn said that the  "Reversible Lane" project tried out in the Sathorn area of the capital had been a great success and he said that he was very satisfied with the results, reported tnamcot. The idea will now be expanded to other traffic black spots in the capital's notorious rush hour.

The "Sathorn Model" project was initiated on June 13th during the 6-7 am rush hour in the area. The changes meant that traffic flow from the Thonburi side of the river increased from 3,000 to 3,500 vehicles during the hour with average speeds rising from 13 kph to 17 kph.

The project involved help from the private sector and led to the presentation of a spanking new white Toyota truck to the happy police yesterday.

One of the biggest problems here in Thailand.  Having police deal with traffic issues.  It should be done by a separate organization that has expertise in this area.  The then police enforce the rules.

Maybe 20 years ago an integrated (all of greater Bangkok) fully computerised traffic light system was installed. It was announced in advance that day 1 would have teething problems.

The system was activated and as forecast in some areas it caused jams.

Quick smart a senior cop ordered that the system be turned off.  No further comments in the media.

Several years later one of the newspapers asked questions about the status of the system. The response 'will not be adjusted, never to turned on again.

My experience is, that the traffic jams in Bangkok and the rest of the Metropolis is created by the motorists themselves. Because they are undisciplinid. You can see this at every busstop, 7eleven, fresh market or Talad Nad at every mayor rd. Thai are the most undisciplined and selfish people in traffic I ever seen.
And the BIB see it all, and do.......notthing.

I think your last comment is the real problem.  With no consequences, motorists have no incentive to obey the laws.

problem is not unique to thailand. it happens all the time where  enforcement is lax. you have to move the whole machinery from reasonably hurting fines for offending against traffic rule to prompt and firm enforcement.

by the way who presented the truck and how it will be mobilized.

when are they going to start using proper cars for the police and not those bloody pickups. Then again I suppose they need something to compensate for their willy size, toys for the boys as they say, beside they would never use the cars the way other police forces do and patrol the roads, that would mean leaving the airconditioned office and actually working:whistling:

Why do they call the reversable lanes the "Sathorn Model" ?

"Farang Model" might be more accurate. Reversible lanes have been in use throughout the world in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, UK, etc. Some of these are now computerized.
