PHUKET: -- Many Thais will have a three-day weekend as the nation celebrates HM Queen Sirikit’s 84th birthday on Friday, August 12, which is also celebrated throughout the nation as Mother’s Day.

To honour the auspicious holiday, as Her Majesty celebrates her Seventh Cycle birthday, all government offices will close, including Phuket Immigration Office, the Employment Office, the Land Transport Office and all three District Offices in Phuket.

All main bank branches will close, but branches in shopping centres will remain open.

All Royal Thai Police and Tourist Police stations will remain open and some local consulates will remain open to serve their respective citizens.

There will be no ban on the sale of alcohol on Friday, Phuket Provincial Police Commander Col Teeraphol Thipjaroen told The Phuket News.

“The sale of alcohol sale is permitted on Mother’s Day. The alcohol ban is for the major Buddhist holidays only,” he said.

Vary surprised that alcohol sales are being allowed. I seem to remember when this was announced last year the authorities changed their minds. Let's see.

Officially there is no ban on either birthday- its down to sycophantic officials who think 'aren't we showing proper respect' when those whose birthday it actually is are not particularly bothered. Last few years that I can remember it was open on Madam's b'day, IIRC the Big Boss's birthday last year we were open as well.

I really don't think they go 'Oh Phuket was (in theory) dry last night- how quaint'.:coffee1:
