Man arrested after knife wielding frenzy at Rama 2 shopping centre

BANGKOK: -- Shoppers and movie goers at a Rama 2 shopping centre scattered in panic yesterday evening as a man with a knife was on the loose.

 

The man was later apprehended by store security and handed over to police. He was named as Nawin, 40, and relatives who contacted Tha Kham police later said that he had been treated for mental health problems for two decades, reported Sanook.

 

A movie goer called Thanawat,43, said that after he had seen a film he went to the toilet and on emerging from the restroom saw a man with a fruit paring knife. The man tried to stab him in the stomach for no reason. 

 

He failed to connect and a struggle developed before Thanawat ran off.

 

The knifeman chased him and then tried to attack many people in the cinema area before fleeing down the stairs. Security gave chase and after a plastic dustbin was hurled at him they managed to make an arrest and detain him before police arrived.

 

Relatives of Nawin arrived at the police station later to say that he had mental health issues and had been treated for twenty years at Somdej Chao Praya hospital.

 

Police are checking this out. No charges have yet been filed and no complaint of injury was received from the public at the department store.

The weapon is described in the article as a fruit paring knife, which is possible. But <deleted> is also used to describe a long wickedly tapered knife used for peeling pomelos, and from the description of how people were scattering like crazy, I have a feeling he had something more than a pen knife in his hand. Either way, kudos to the security guards for getting this guy under control until the police arrived.

it might be a good idea to send him for psychiatric evaluation  prior to taking any action. this approach is necessary in public interest and if his mental status is unstable then society must be protected from him.
