PHUKET: Phuket hotel and tourism organizations issued a joint statement yesterday evening in the wake of a string of bombings across southern Thailand, including twin bombings in Patong yesterday (story here).

The Phuket Tourist Association, Thai Hotel Association, Patong Hotel Association and the Kata Karon Hotel Business Association’s declaration stated that they expect the bombings to briefly affect the numbers of Thai tourists visiting Phuket, but would not change the number of foreign tourists or visitors to the island.

“We estimate that the short-term effects may include hotel cancellations among locals. Nevertheless, no significant cancellations among foreigners have been reported,” the statement reads. “We believe that should any security measures arise, they will greatly reassure both Thai and foreign tourists’ confidence.”

“The occupancy rate is generally at 70 per cent, while the hotels in Patong are now at 80 per cent.”

The tourist and hotelier associations believe that Thai tourism will recover quickly, stating that their associations are cooperating with officials to restore order and safety in Phuket.

These guys have no idea , if you want tourism you must maintain law and order to some degree, I thought the whole point of a coup was to avoid this situation they have failed  Prayut should step down .

Tourism is the only Export Thailand enjoys some kind of growth now days, while

all other traditional exports revenue earners have faltered and no foreign investment coming in,

so somebody or some groups is trying to hurt Thailand where it hurts the most.....

Short-term effects
Its incredible how the most recent bombings are swept under the carpet as if implying peoples lives are a mere bagatelle compared to tourism. No other country in the world brags, lies, or predicts such figures of tourists they expect to materialise as vigorously as Thailand does. The baht as we all know is more important than foreigners well being. Time and time again, they’ve shown their major concerns for the leisure industry is paramount at all costs to its survival.

Wouldn’t it be nice if now and then they showed real compassion and concern rather than the usual candid hospital visits with the group pictures masquerading as human beings with their flower and basket treats from TAT and other tourism officials?

This circus act has to get its act together

12 Billion $ is really not that much for a country that did sell Condos worth more to Tourists not long ago each year !

Its still down 90% compare to last year

"Tourism authorities and hotel associations released statements saying foreign tourism will not be affected".  I rather think that will be for the foreign tourists to decide, not some lame hotel association and TAT.

TAT has nothing to worry about, a nuclear strike can can wipe out Thailand but TAT like cockroaches will rise up and say total destruction of our country will have no effect on tourism, numbers are soaring to come to the radioactive country

The question is then why the THB is so strong (even after the bombing) so there must be decent investments from outside into Thailand.

Presumably you think the French, German, Norwegian, British and American governments should all step down? All failed to stop terrorism with far more resources than Thailand has at its disposal.

There was noticeably less traffic in Hua Hin this weekend as the crowd from BKK did not come down.

Same in Pattaya, should have been hectic with Bangkok people down for a long weekend, but much quieter than usual.

Above 80% occupancy during low season. Glad everything is going so well there

in Phuket. It is considerably quieter in Pattaya, :P
