Biden: Trump is 'thoroughly unqualified' for presidency

By KEN THOMAS

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden assailed Donald Trump's ability to lead America at home and abroad on Monday, branding him as indifferent to the needs of Americans in his first campaign appearance with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

Biden, who decided not to make a third presidential bid last year, said in his native city of Scranton that Trump was "totally, thoroughly unqualified" to be president, calling him a dangerous voice on national security and foreign policy.

On the economy, he said, Trump's reveling in his TV reality show tag-line, "You're fired," showed his true colors.

"He's trying to tell us he cares about the middle class? Give me a break. It's such a bunch of malarkey," Biden told a crowd of about 3,000 at Riverfront Sports, adding: "He doesn't have a clue."

Pennsylvania has not supported a Republican in a presidential election since 1988, but is among the most-contested battleground states between Clinton and Trump, who are both vying for white working-class voters here.

Even as polls show her leading Trump, Clinton has faced lingering questions about her trustworthiness in the fallout of her use of a private email server as secretary of state and over her family's sprawling foundation. She has tried to make the case that working-class voters would fare better under her economic policies than Trump's and that her opponent would inject danger into an already unstable world.

Offering himself as a character witness for Clinton, Biden portrayed the former secretary of state as the most qualified person to lead the country, singling out her foreign policy experience and passion for improving people's lives. He cited his long history with Clinton, saying he's known her for three decades, since before she was first lady in the 1990s.

"Hillary has forgotten more about American foreign policy then Trump and his entire team will ever understand," he said.

And he cited Clinton's gender as a powerful asset, saying electing the first female president would change the lives of American women and girls.

"Hillary Clinton is going to write the next chapter in American history," he said.

Introducing Biden, Clinton sought to sow doubts about Trump's ability to bring jobs back to blue-collar communities like Scranton, where Biden lived for the first decade of his life before moving to Delaware.

She acknowledged that many people in the audience might have friends considering voting for the Republican, but offered this advice: "Friends should not let friends vote for Trump."

Clinton and Biden spoke ahead of Trump's national security address in Ohio, questioning the business mogul's ability to represent the nation overseas.

In his speech, Trump accused Clinton of pushing policies that have opened the United States to foreign terrorists.

"Hillary Clinton wants to be America's Angela Merkel," he said, arguing that Germany's immigration policy has weakened that country's national security.

Clinton said Trump had been "all over the place" on foreign policy and had suggested sending in ground troops to fight the Islamic State group. "That is off the table as far as I'm concerned," she said.

Biden warned that Trump was unprepared to oversee nuclear codes and cited Trump's praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

If Trump likes them, "He would have loved" Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union until his death in 1953. Scholars estimate that under Stalin, more than 1 million people were executed in political purges and millions more died as a result of harsh labor and cruel treatment in the vast gulag prison camp system.

Citing a common bond, both Democrats pointed back to their family ties in northeastern Pennsylvania. Biden, a frequent visitor, recalled the street he grew up on and later took Clinton for a quick visit to his old house. Clinton noted her grandfather worked at a Scranton lace mill factory and that her father was raised here and later attended Penn State University. The family spent summers at a family cabin in nearby Lake Winola, she said.

Biden and Clinton had planned to campaign together here before last month's Democratic National Convention but their rally was postponed because of the deadly police shooting in Dallas. The vice president is expected to campaign for Clinton in several battleground states where he remains popular, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Florida.

My (very stupid) buddy Martin disagrees with Biden.

He says Trump is the only one that can save us from the super wealthy and their devious plan to reduce the world population with nuclear war.

Vote Trump if you love your family.

Gotta love those Trump supporters. LOL

Biden is a pure professional of malarkey, so he must be right.  but what is really going on, which Biden also knows, is something quite different than malarkey.... there are two kinds of politicians, according to Larry Summers... the insider kind.. or what my generation fifty years ago called 'the establishment'.... and the politicians who get vomited out for not being an insider.  I'm not a Trump fan at all, but he is being vomited out.

I think rather it's a case of bulimia. Trump has vomited himself out.

Biden was the original Trump, when selected for VP.

I bet he secretly is envious that Trump can speak out....because Biden, long ago, was told to polish up his act.

This is nothing more than positioning....as Biden is sucking up to Obama's every wish.  Politics suck.  That is why I am staying away from "polished politics".  Sure got Hillary in trouble...lol.

If he is keeping his envy secret, it's because he has enough self-respect to be ashamed of it.

Well I think that Hillary only has to get the election nailed and then Bill will take over the everyday running.  This is clearly the most bizarre American election in history and quite honestly anything could happen (apart from Trump being elected, we haven't sunk that low yet).  Are there challengers in the wings?  God knows both parties need something!

America is in deep doo!  Dang if they do and dang if they don't!  A serious lack of quality leadership, a vacuum, with no obvious help coming in the future.

There is a giant sucking sound growing louder as America's Constitution, Judicial System, and Rule of Law go down the tubes.

Sad for some, jubilation for others.

She does have these awful, face contorting, "glitches", and fits.   Her head looks like one of those bobbing heads on a spring, in the back window of the car.   Waddahelizit?  Reminds me of that movie "Green Mask".

Trump looks a bit funny, but Hillary is a laugh riot.  I wonder how foreign leaders will react, if she goes into that face spasm thing.

When Trump fans can't discuss policy proposal specs, they devolve to denigrating their opponent. It shows how bereft they are.  The Divider is sowing division, day by day.   Perhaps he needs some more help from Gingrich ("YOU PEOPLE SHOULD BE TERRIFIED!") or Christie ("GUILTY OR NOT GUILTY?!") or Carson saying HRC is in cahoots with the devil because she read a book 53 years ago which had a a foreword which mentioned the word 'Satan.'

Can you see the pattern here?   Trump and his few supporters are on the ropes (a boxing expression).

ROFL.   Yeah, right.  The most famously unqualified president & vice in history flapping their incompetent jaws about a candidate being "unqualified", and anybody with a pulse is actually going to listen.  Hmmm.  'Seems to me their desperation and total lack of credibility makes a stronger case that Trump really must be qualified, despite his chart-topping bombast.  Hillary'd be much better off if those two clowns just kept their mouths shut.

Biden is pretty much a "do nothing" person...working for a lame President who has been a great disappointment to many of us.  America is literally going up in smoke with the racial tension.  Hillary  panders to "low quality" groups such as "Black Lives Matter".  Whacko left wingnut groups are proliferating, while little boy Biden goes around stirring things up, at Obama's bidding.  Biden needs to shut up.

I was wondering how long the Alex Jones rubbish about seizures and the like would take to permeate through the right wing craposphere and into comments here.

We have been already warned that this is an off topic area....you must have missed it.  However, it is clear Clinton supporters share immunity....even on TV.

I suggest you cease pursuing your tin foil routine.....kind of cliche at best.

There is no immunity and continuing down that line a discussion on the open forum will earn a warning and suspension.

This topic is about Biden/Trump.   That's what is permitted here.   Other threads discuss other threads are open for discussion on other candidates.
