Thailand risks losing 200,000 visitors after blasts - tourism office

BANGKOK: -- Thailand could lose up to 200,000 foreign visitors and $293 million in tourism revenue this year, the head of its tourism authority said on Monday, after a series of deadly blasts in tourist towns last week.

The wave of attacks in places including the seaside town of Hua Hin and the island of Phuket, is the biggest challenge to an industry that has weathered more than a decade of instability and bounced back from violence over recent years.

Yuthasak Supasorn, governor of the state Tourism Authority of Thailand, said the attacks could result in long-term losses in terms of tourist revenue and arrivals, mainly from other Asian countries. "By the year end, there could be about 100,000 to 200,000 travel cancellations," he said in a statement.

      And Buddha agreed.

nah.  there will always be dumb backpackers and chinese travellers, what will effect us are the long stay foreigners.  no longer are they here.  visa banns, forced visa runs-WITH WORK PERMIT, yaddi yaddi yaddi. THailand is NOT friendly for foreigners to work here.   Without white people to help guide their own people travelling in thailand.....  noone trust a thai.  their love of money and saving face,  always kills people.  and with these thai on tourist crime.... not looking to good.

but on the other hand.

My marketing SEO software is taking off since it can replace an entire team of thai marketers.

what blows my mind.  if you dont want to pay 100USD ot make 1000USD  you must be thai. id like to thanks thank the smart peeps out there.

"Thailand could lose up to 200,000 foreign visitors and $293 million in tourism revenue this year, the head of its tourism authority said on Monday, after a series of deadly blasts in tourist towns last week. "

Tourism, Tourism, Tourism. Why not abandon the present outmoded education system and effectively educate, and adequately train Thais to be competitive in the global industrial and technical market. Thus not having to depend on outsiders visiting Thailand, and single agricultural exports for a major source of income? Tourism and agricultural products can still be a viable industries. However, they are too prone to weather and socio-political events.

Why is Thailand so dependent on foreigners for income? Because those foreigners visiting Thailand live in industrially advanced nations, and earn a higher wage than than Thais.  Thus they have surplus income to spend. Wouldn't it benefit Thailand more if they could become a greater player in the global economy and create surplus income for its populace?

Unfortunately, that would mean changing the old ways of doing business and kicking out those who run the education and business sectors. So, as with most every other change that would benefit Thailand...Ain't gonna happen.

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s tourism industry is sure to suffer after the series of bombings last week. The country could lose over THB10 billion and 200,000 tourists, according to the head of the tourism authority.

Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) state governor, Yuthasak Supasorn, said that theattacks in tourist destinations in south Thailand last week could damage the country’s tourism industry and the repercussions could be long-term.

In a statement, he said that there could be anywhere from 100,000 to 200,000 travel cancelations by the end of the year and those could cause the industry to lose THB5.8 billion to THB10.16 billion, reported Bangkok Post.

And from another source:

Quote

The recent spate of bombing and arson attacks in seven southern provinces are unlikely to impact on Thailand’s growth rate or GDP which is anticipated to register at 3.3 percent for the whole of this year, said Mr Paramethi Wimonsiri, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Board, on Monday.

If 200,000 is enough to cause significant damage to the tourism industry here then the other figures that TAT spout must be a bit dubious since it is a fairly insignificant portion of the near 30m visitors they claimed last year (less than 1%) which was itself over 20% more than for 2014.

what they don't realise is that if people suspect they are telling the slightest lie about who was responsible and what they are doing about it or are suspected of covering up the truth - it will do more harm

Being open honest and realistic will go a long way to dispel any reservations people have.

This is something that they consistently get wrong, they cover up or twist the truth and it is so obvious that people just don't trust anything they are saying or doing, it is always better to tell the truth then people might just feel confidence in what they are doing

Security is a big issue in the world today, France being a fine example, people are confident that what they release to the public is generally accurate and that they are not hiding anything, they also truthfully share to the public measures they are taking to ensure public safety, it inspires confidence

It is getting more and more difficult to trust what is being posted on social media these days. This is one of the more believable threads - although the estimate of loss might be underestimated.

In keeping with local tradition, loss of earnings far far surpasses loss of life!

If the bombs don't scare them off the bus crashes will. :w00t:

numbers will be up by at least a million at the end of the tourist season. elections planned for the start of 2017 high season when the real fireworks will start. going to take some serious number fudging to make things look rosy for that high season.

I wish I also had a magical bum to pull numbers out of.

Another good reason to get those tracking SIMs in place. If only to find those 200,000 'lost' visitors.

Bang on

Should give tourists Discounts for walking the gauntlet!!

There wont be a statistician amongst those 200,000 people.  Statisticians will stay away because of the roads and balconies!

TAT PREDICTIONS

Obviousy, caught out on a Big Lie. It's nigh on pathetic the shit they churn out about tourist figures and Thailand being the Topmost and ultimate destination in the world.

Its by far becoming much less interesting than years gone by. Also, governed by military rule and no inclination of any democracy being implemented other than by force if voters do as their told.

Anyway, I'm sure we'll all be thrilled soon hearing the Baht is going from strength to strength with new foreign investors clambering for pole position once the latest Big Fudged accounts have been summarised.

Just saying ..... :coffee1:

There shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth. Hair will be pulled out as the end draws nigh.

Someone is very happy that those nice people at the Tourism office can't keep their mouth shut, and has kindly told him that the strategy works and has a definite cost to Thais.

That's smart...

That's a rather huge increase on the newly published figure of 200,000.

Thais get confused if there are more than 3 zeroes. On a calculator, that's the 0 key and the 00 key. After that the mind gets foggy, which is why they ignore the last syllable of 3-or-more-syllable words: motosy (motorcycle), batt (battery), com (computer) etc etc. If they could shorten TV they would, but they can't so it's a tooratat.

And here I thought only 1 person (in Do-Buy) would take pleasure from such heinous acts on innocent people and the fallout which could affect many jobs, the economy, livelihoods, stability, tourism, etc.

And what does one's superiority complex have to do with a drop in tourism? Let's hope for better outlooks ahead on both fronts.

The guys who wanna watch airborne Ping Pong balls, or kiss their ladyboy goodnight will still show up and maybe come.  Yes, many foreigners will still come in Thailand, but a lot of them have to go. Even when it's off the balcony from 79th floor.

Or maybe a little cocktail with Rohypnol and some stronger stuff, as it doesn't seem to matter if they wake up, or not. New foreigners are already on the plane to replace them. Mai Pen Rai, na khrap.

hi lostinisaan

possibly it  is a typo in your write up. but the loss of revenue is $293 million and not BILLION.

yes but the number of bona fide  visitors could drop unless situation improves dramatically.

totally agree with your observation of the categories  of visitors you  have so explicitly described
