Cutting grass ............ will it die if cut short ?

We put down our lawn during the got weather and with a lot of watering it managed to survive.  However, to avoid the ground getting baked dry I let the grass grow to about 4 inches.

Now I want to cut it down to about 2 inches I face the problem that only the top of the grass is green and a cut to 2 inches exposes the non green grass beneath. If I do this will the lawn die or will the deeper grass turn green ?

Picture illustrates the problem.

hanks in advance for any advice.T

Two inches, not a problem.  The deeper grass won't turn green, but new growth will be so.

However, probably best to do the cutting in gradual stages over a few weeks to avoid unnecessarily stressing the grass.

Ok .......thanks for that Oxx. Will just take off an inch first and gradually go down from there.

Last year I was at a resort in the mountains around Petchabun and it had the most perfect lawn I have seen in Thailand. Grass less than half inch high and very thick ....no soil in sight. More like a putting green or snooker table. They told me they had done nothing special except regular weeding and cutting.

We had a not maintained lawn. Everything grew there, but no grass.

I started cutting daily, not to short. Now we have a very nice lawn. I cut now once a week, and very short.

That's what I'm doing with the back garden. Not putting turf down just weeding and cutting. As you say , should come good in about 6 months time.

your turf appears to be similar to south african kikuyu, it loves direct sunlight, is drought resistant and can be cut down to 25mm or less. it will always come back, even if you chop it down to soil.

the majority of successful turf i have seen in (north - east) thailand is a variety of buffalo, a broad leafed grass that is shade resistant. it hates to be cut to below 100mm and does not like dry conditions or full sun exposure.

how are you cutting? brush cutter, mower? stick to the recom's of post #2 and see how you go.

Cutting with an electric strimmer.  Handles it ok.  Cut it back to 2 inches yesterday and giving it water since a bit dry around here. Rain threatens but doesn't fall.

Looking at the lower of the two pictures, it's not only your grass that needs trimming.

Nope ......................... keeps the mossies off.   Do practice a bit of  topiary down south though. Helps a lot with sweat rash around the rock garden. :)
