At risk of becoming the lynch mob's next target, could it not be possible that he IS innocent AND that his family are influentially wealthy, and that the "quiet release" was to prevent embarrassment to the police, and the air ticket was 'atonement' to him and his family for his wrongful arrest and interrogatory beating?

His reasons for going to temple are his own and none of my (or your) business!

 

But if you KNOW something about it, then you should get on to the authorities in Bangkok, as well as the national press, and give them the evidence you obviously have.

 

These know-it-all comments from the bar stool experts are a welcomed reminder of why I moved out into the wilds of the north where it is unlikely I'll run into any westerners!

Don't believe everything you read in the press to suit an agenda.Released quietly just means he was let out the front door without the media parasites being told.They drove him to the airport.Who knows if he is going to be a monk and who really cares and the airfare payment is compensation for missed flight.All easily explained if you think past the headlines.

If I was head monk at the wat, I wouldn't have accepted him.   In Zen Buddhist tradition, monks are encouraged to leave, to test their mettle in wanting to stay.  In Thai Buddhist tradition, they'll accept any dregs that get sucked in the gate.
