With one of these (used in Singapore) it would take 2 hours to do the trip one-way. It cruises at 28 knots or 53 km/hr. It's hardly scary and is usually a very smooth ride. I've traveled back and forth from Singapore to Batam many times. The problem is, would there be the market to justify the purchase one or more of these.

These cats are in operation between samui, Phangan, chumporn and Koh tao.

As for a smooth ride, sure, if the water is smooth.

They are essentially harbour ferries, they roll like mad in any sort of chop.

Try the chumporn Koh tao crossing in November if you doubt my words.

Yes...the one in the photo looks a little dodgy and probably doesn't go that fast anyway. Here's a 'Thai' ferry that goes from Hua Hin to Kho Phangan which is more like the type they would use in Pataya.

Have you an aversion to Italian seamen?

Oh, no - just one particular ex-one who might eventually be free'd,

then scarper off to the the other side of the world...

Dare I ask why this will take at least 5 years to implement?

You really think it's going to be that quick?

This ferry connection has been talked about for decades!

Possibly a catamaran like this one, which was used as high-speed ferry across the North Channel next to the Irish Sea.

Bad news.  Chinese have a tendency toward motion sickness.  Comes from not having vehicles when they were growing up.  (Strangely, the smoother the car rides, the worse it gets.)

I'm forecasting a huge market for barf bags if they do start a 2 hour ferry.

Edit:  Flew once in the back section of a 747 into Beijing.  A couple of hours from landing, it got a little choppy.  Literally, I was the only passenger in the back 20 rows that didn't have to use  the bag.

While also the problem of high fuel consumption might be hindrance.

Like all the stopped high speed cross channel services between UK and continent.

Although the Chunnel also played a big part.

Read the article in the Bangkok Post, it says a bit about fuel consumption.

Let me tell you how this turns out. They start the ferry service. They hire some of these useless phuychais that drive the Pattaya speedboats. Their drunk most of the time and run into a fishing boat going full speed. The ferry sinks and 300 tourist die. The authorities chalk this up to bad luck.

A Thai ferry travelling at an average of 53 km/h, somehow I find that scary.

Just like the 69 kph average in a car. Not a chance unless there is a lot of wreckage left behind on the road. Don't the people who give these values have any idea of what it takes to produce a good average?

...speaking about what's in that photo...

...a previous ply of the Koh SiChang Route

the insides are a little more impressive, but it would be needed for a more sea-going trip:
