BANGKOK, 26 August 2016 (NNT) – Suvarnabhumi Airport has signed a contract with 3 companies to expand its passenger capacity from a current 45 million people per year to 60 million.

Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Somkid Jatusripitak chaired the signing of the contracts to develop Suvarnabhumi Airport using funding from the government ‘s 2011-2017 budgets. The expansion will include a new airplane parking structure, a connection tunnel in the airport’s south and utilities. Contractors tasked with the work include Italian Thai, SG and Interlink and SCS Consortium, which will be overseeing the work.

Somkid explained that the phase 2 work will raise the airport’s capacity in line with its growing role as an international travel hub. He noted the work is part of the government’s economic stimulus effort and will be followed up by development at Don Muang Airport as well as hubs in Chiang Rai, Hat Yai and U-Tapao, all with the aim to make Thailand a center for commerce, investment and tourism.

So who holds the land titles for this expansion or is the land that Thaksin previously stole?

...'...while Rome burns...'...

....a 'people processing plant' by any other name....

Actually, the four phase expansion plan was developed during the Yingluck administration. But the second expansion project has constantly been delayed after the country's military government decided to scrutinise state enterprises and large projects worth at least THB1bn ($31m) to ensure transparency and exercise more control over state companies.

But nice to see the unspent funds from 2011-2015 are now being used.

Wait a minute. They're increasing capacity from current 45 million to 60 million. But isn't it already well over capacity? So when it's finished it will be about right, ok, but then what happens in 5 years? 10 years?

reactive. standard practice in this great country. hope they dont just tap the new drains into the existing system. they will have to start using amphibious sea planes in the wet season.

Well Swampy was flooded a few days ago,God knows where they can displace the

amount of water that can be expected to arrive in the near future,

make a canal from BKK to the sea perhaps?

That depends if swampy is higher than sealevel or the seawater will flow landinwards, same as in the chao praya river.

I'm afraid it goes back even further than Yingluck, there's plenty of blame to spread round   ...

"However, there has been no serious discussion at AoT of the original plan to build a mid-field terminal, a third runway and supporting facilities that would raise capacity to 54 million in 2011.

That plan, which would have cost 48 billion baht, was shelved by former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra

Under the original master plan, two subsequent expansions would ultimately lift capacity to 120 million passengers a year in 2026, while doubling cargo-handling capacity to 6.4 million tonnes.

I hope they also add additional Passport / Immigration booths to help relieve the sometimes horrendous waiting times upon arrival.

On Monday I was directed to the VIP section with my wife. Went straight to a waiting IO. Three minutes max for both of us.

To top it all our bags were among the first out on the carousel. Must have been my lucky day.
