One for Crossy.

I need to completely rewire my external wall lights and intend to surface mount the wiring in UPV conduit using a weatherproof JB at each lamp location with a feed up to each individual lamp also in sealed conduit. Clearly I need to wire the lamps in parallel but need some tips on actual wiring connections.

The total run distance is around 170 metres feeding about 20 to 25 lamps each with a 3.5 watt LED bulb possibly some may have a 5 watt LED. from a previous project I have 200m each of single core 2.5sq mm cable in White and Black and 200 metres of 1.5 sq mm single core in GREEN (latter would do for the ground/earth. The existing feed in underground conduit from inside house switch via an Autoswitch would be used. I also plan to use 3/8 inch yellow conduit to be painted on completion.

Main query: What is the best way to connect the wires from each lamp to the main Line and Neutral and Ground inside each JB. Locals just twist the wires and insulate with PVC tape. Should I use the Plastic Cap screw-on connectors? 'Chocolate block' mechanical screw connectors?

Or should I run the L and N up to the terminal of each lamp bulb holder and back down again (that means six wires in a 3/8 inch conduit albeit a short rum.The actual lamps are cast metal alloy so would need to connect a ground wire to each......

Any pointers welcome.

I would use the white conduit, easier to paint to match your house (unless you have a yellow house).

I would use choc-blocs, wago connectors or wire-nuts (anything other than twist-n tape) in the junction boxes and just run a dropper to each light.

The wire you have will be more than adequate for the load in question, do however ensure the circuit is on an RCD / RCBO for safety (no need if you already have a whole-house unit).

Thanks Crossy, you have confirmed my intention. The existing circuit feed already has the front-end safety and CB.

The perimeter wall will be reprimed and repainted post installation so the opacity of the paint will cover yellow conduit but I may well go for the white.

Thanks again.
