Air Asia management says crew volunteered to prostrate before a passenger to apologize her

BANGKOK: -- Air Asia management has categorically denied that it forced one cabin crew to apologize a passenger by means of prostrating before her and her autistic niece.

The incident occurred on September 2 and the incident was eventually posted on the social media and went wild sparking off dissenting comments against the woman passenger and also against a manager of the airline for allegedly forcing the crew to prostrate.

Many of the comments came from staff of Air Asia as they vented frustration on the social media against the passenger as well as the manager.

The incident has prompted Air Asia CEO Tony Fernandez to fly into Bangkok to personally assure the company’s Thai staff that is fair to its staff.

Tony Fernandez, accompanied by the airline’s Thai executives, will on Friday fly to Hat Yai to personally apologize to the air crew and her family over the unfortunate incident.

At a meeting with the Thai staff on Thursday, the CEO vowed to take responsibility for the incident and assured them that the management has always attached importance to its staff.

BANGKOK — Flight attendants are trained to handle all kind of emergency situations, but being forced to grovel at the feet of disgruntled passengers is probably not on the list.

That’s what a Thai AirAsia hostess had to do after an Aug. 26 flight to appease a woman who believed the attendant had insulted her autistic daughter. Online accounts of the Sept. 2 incident said she was forced to prostrate herself by airline management; the company said it was a voluntary act of contrition.

"...At a meeting with the Thai staff on Thursday, the CEO vowed to take responsibility for the incident and assured them that the management has always attached importance to its staff..."

Other managers in Thailand must be cringing at this outrageous action - it could set a very unwelcome precedent - RESPONSIBILITY!

So in short let me get this straight.

A passenger has an Autistic Daughter.

A member of the crew offered her help.

The passenger flew into a rage because she thought she was being mocked.

As an apology the passenger wanted the crew member to prostrate herself, for having the audacity for doing her job, by lending assistance.

The crew member felt pressured to prostate herself.

OK, so let this be a lesson to everyone - No good deed goes unpunished.

Got to feel for the flight attendant who could have so easily been complained about for not offering help when she thought it may be needed.

Work place bullying.  Try doing this in a civilised and developed country and the company will be paying millions in compensation.  I guess the management will turn up for a publicity stunt photo and all will be forgiven

And if Thailand was a developed country you would not give a hoot.

Tony Fernandez only comes out of his anonymity and hiding to put out fires...

other than that, you try to get a hold of him to put any concerns or graveness,

the man is a ghost and unreachable.....

Unlike most airline CEOs who will jump right on the phone with anybody who calls.

You ever want an indication of how an organisation truthfully views its customers see how they treat their employees.

Air Asia is quietly infamous for the treatments of its employees including payment, work place conditions and requirements.   It specifically recruits from places where individuals are desperate to get into the airline industry.

On a flying plane the big knobs are the head steward and the pilot. This couldn't have been a directive from management.

The second article in the thread says that after the passenger complained the flight attendant concerned, supposedly the chief purser, was summoned by airline managers to met them and the complainant then comes the dispute as to whether the purser was forced to prostrate herself or did so voluntarily.

Much of the story is based on social media though.

Do you know of any country/area where they have problems hiring enough air cabin staff?

If it was a local (Thai manager) that ordered this, then that person should undergo re-training before being allowed to manage again. You DO NOT need to bow and scrape before people who you are offering to help! A**holes. They should be thanking the "offerer" for their attention. :coffee1:

Most managers have read some books about management, but haven't got the foggiest idea what management means or implies.

Lets have even one example of where you personally have tried to get hold of him to put your 'concerns or graveness'

He's far more proactive than a lot of Airline CEO's, or any kind of CEO's for that matter

What, the incident that happened some 18 months ago?

Bit off topic to bring that up in this thread innit?  What's the correlation?

No as it's all over the news since the official finding, now released, blames the flight crew.

The flight attendent was wearing a uniform......would'nt that place them on a pedestal above the passengers!

Does'nt everyone here kowtow to a uniform?

Passengers should realize that a uniformed, flight attendant can file a formal, written complaint against a passenger, and if approved by the Airline and Government Officials, a passenger can placed on a, 'no fly,' list for life!  And, in many countries, Federal charges are filed, and the passenger will face arrest, jail/prison and big fines.  If the passenger’s actions qualified as a terror, they could face prison or even a life sentence without a trial or sentencing in some countries today.   These new policies are in accordance with recent Presidential and Government orders.

I really miss common sense and folks being polite to everyone.

Normal among many Thai CEO's and executives.

Vichai at Leicester City does it with some of his staff apparently.

And they seem to have completely forgotten that the forward thinking King Chulalongkorn put a stop to all this prostrating when he succeeded his father.
