About 200 Zika cases recorded in Thailand: ministry

BANGKOK: -- Thailand has recorded about 200 cases of Zika since January, the health ministry said on Tuesday, making it a country with one of the highest numbers of confirmed cases in the region.

It was the first time Thailand's health ministry has confirmed the number of Zika cases this year.

The announcement comes a day after health experts called on Thailand to be more transparent in reporting the Zika threat to the public after health officials played down risks from rising infections of the mosquito-borne virus.

Wonder how they will deny this to save their tourism?

Settle down lads, it's a Reuters article - just wait for the NNT to come and whitewash it with lies and obfuscation.

Should only be a matter of minutes.

So the statement a few weeks that Thailand is Zika free, was absolute 'tosh'. No surprises there. It does seem that some news just does not tell the truth, which makes anything hardly believable. No wonder I am skeptical when a spokesperson from the government comes out with statements of any kind.

Less than a month ago MPH said no concern for Zika and a few cases only.  Last week it was 20+.  This week, 200+.

Arthur C. Clarke once said; "Never attribute to malevolence what is merely due to incompetence".

The Minister is probably working on some fanciful media release about arrival numbers and expenditure to prove nothing affects tourism.

Only because it is being reported by Reuters

The Thai's don't believe the statements either

truth could be far different as many people do not go for check up due to the mild symptoms of zika. only a concerted effort to contact trace can provide more reliable figures.

the overall situation is likely to get worse  before matters are brought under control. medical opinion is that it is not going to be possible to eradicate zika and we may have to live with it.

how many people here know that you can actually BUY the zika virus online for really not much money

and what is one supposed to do with the purchase?

zika is present world wide and it is unlikely that it impact tourism noticeably.

I'll bet the authorities are playing this down. In all probability thousands have been affected and were not diagnosed with zika as the symptoms are very similar to other mosquito borne viruses. As the symptoms are mild many would not have sought medical assistance where a blood test is required to positively identify the virus.

It may well be that in a few months time when babies with deformities are being born that the true size of the outbreak is known (heaven forbid).

Well, "not deterring tourists" show a serious lack of responsibility, as the virus will spread to the tropical countries where tourists come from, where there are mosquitoes.

We're talking about Thailand and if it spreads and increases to a great extent you don't think tourists might think twice especially as govts around the world issue travel advisories.

Granted some people don't mind taking risks but many do.
