Oktoberfest opens under heightened security

Oktoberfest in Munich has opened amid heavy rain and even heavier security.

Terrorism fears in Germany have seen the world’s biggest beer festival fenced off for the first time. The number of stewards has increased and backpacks and large bags are prohibited, in most cases.

Some six million people are expected to descend on the Bavarian city over the 17-day event.

Authorities say the aim is to keep the more-than-200-year-old festival authentic, but safe.

Fears were raised in July, 2016, when ten people were killed and dozens injured in separate gun, bomb, axe and knife attacks in and around the southern region across one week.

Who knows.

As one who has spent many a happy week in Munich at this festival. It is sad to see it descending into a security nightmare for the many millions that enjoy attending it.

I'm sure there are already plenty of disgruntled guests. I mean, really, how could the Germans be so crass as to enjoy alcohol and music within their midst?

It is all very simple. If you like beer and having a good time then go there and party it up, and if you don,t like enjoying yourself with like minded souls then stay away. If however the latter group tries in any way to sabotage the Oktoberfest then they should all be seen as what they really are, a threat to western civilization, and dealt with accordingly !
